Does anyone know if there's anything I can do about a very slow healer? My boy is a 5 yr old ex racer with a magnificent talent for carving himself up. He generally swells up in a very disturbing fashion but never seems to be lame, worried, unhappy, e.t.c. My concern is even the smallest of nicks seem to take forever to heal.

He's generally in fairly good shape, a bit under weight but we're working on that and was not in great condition when we got him but now looks fab (apart from the weight!) Was just wondering if there's anything that might give him a boost and help his body with all the repair work he needs!

i know a lady who swears by aloe vera! she aloe vera's everything including a horse who she was told to have shot but it healed.... mite help your boy heal a bit quicker

Could be his immune system needs a boost perhaps, especially if he's a bit underweight atm? In which case an all round vit/min supplement might help, or one of the ones aimed specifically at immune system boosts. I think there's one called Red Cell and another called ProPel which might be worth looking into? (Been a while since I used them tho, so they might not be suitable)
Arnica is also good for cuts/scrapes/bruises/swelling along with aloe vera gel

Have had 2 of those - first I put on Top Spec Comprehensive feed supplement because his feet/topline needed "something" but within a month his healing rate had improved dramatically, and within 8 weeks his almost constant mud fever disapeared too. Only problem was that the stuff's expensive, and I didn't dare take him off it again!
When next horse was also a slow healer and had poor feet, I went straight for the TS powder - and she wouldn't eat it. She's now on the Balancer which she loves, her feet and healing rates both vastly improved, and as she needs nothing else, I actually spend less on feed!
So I think the short answer

might be - a slow healer is probably missing something in their diet!

Was thinking that, is now on Blue Chip which is working wonders for the rest of him! Actually have some Red Cell so might give him a boost with that (hope he'll eat it, the one it was bought for refused point blank!) Hoping it's all a matter of time as he was in fairly poor nick when I got him. Other problem I have is he appears to be allergic to cereals so having SO much fun feeding him. He's on alfalfa pellets which seem to suit with his blue chip and chaff, just waiting for him to find another new and interesting ailment (did I mention he LOVES getting cast in HUGE stable with anti cast roller on!)

The joys of TBs!

Do be careful with the Red Cell. I put a scraggly thing on it a few years ago and she suddenly came out one day saying "I FEEL FANTASTIC"! Cue one incredibly lively ISH who had no idea what to do with all her sudden joy for life! Wouldn't have been so bad, except she was such a dear thing a friend was riding her that day to see whether she wanted to consider getting a youngster next... she didn't. Took her a month or so to learn how to be healthy and happy without exploding.
Next time, I used it on half strength and was patient...
