My horse is full of beans at the moment and is naturally foward going. He is green, but learning well.

I do lots of transitions, lots of circles and serpentines and am introducing leg yeilding. We don't do much canter work as he is so forward going.

Are there any other exercises I can do to help slow him down?

Also, he doesn't like standing still when asked to halt, any suggestions.

Thanks x

walk
walk
walk
walk
walk
until he is chilled out

but doing patterns like 1 m loops - 4 down the long side of the school
5m circles
4 loop serpentines across the short width of the school

all with the correct bend and change of direction

if he fidgets at halt then turn each halt into a turn on the forehand

do this for 15 mins and also review the food he is getting - cut out the sugary stuff

ride diamond shapes
half circles and incline back to track followed immediately by same in reverse

As above walk, I took on a horse to school, she bolted and then stopped dead at walls and gates her owner was terified of her, I put her in a waterford and for the first week just walked nothing faster doing basic school movements, and gradually built up trot work then after about a month done a half circle of canter it seemed to work with her. I once was given a bit of advice, you can make a horse more forward but can not make a horse more laid back and i always remember that but i to like forward horses. Its just work hope all goes well

It would be worth checking the saddle fit. I know a horse who just would not stand still and always wanted to be trotting rather than walkling. Turned it his saddle was way too narrow and pinching. It meant standing still was very uncomfortable, but he got some relief when trotting
