hi i currently drive a m reg lwb 2.8 shogun, it's been a great car, very realiable but just find it to big and slugish at towing (uphills), i used to have a discovery but this was b4 i had my towing liscence so my dad used to tow with it and i always felt it didnt struggle at all but as i never actually towed with it i cant compare to much...
bascally my parents have offered to bye it from me so i could get something i like better, money is a slight issue, will only have 1700 to spend, and was thinking of getting a swb diahatsu, just wondered if these are good at towing? i only tow a 14.2 with no partition, i like the idea of having a small cheaper car as mine costs so much in fuel to run on a day to day basis, or if there are any other 4x4 i could look into that wont cost so much to run!! any ideas geatfully appriciated!! :)

Diahatsu's are brilliant for towing but they do max 30mpg. If you find a good one thats great but the sills go rusty and both me and my uncle had to have them welded to pass the MOT and will have to again next yr. (Check this when you look at them)

Mine is fab for towing but looking to upgrade fairly soon (done 152,000 miles!!)

SWB shoguns are nice too

when you say a small diahatsu, do you mean the fortrak or sportrak??? if the latter I don't think it tows, I believe it's equivalent to a suzuki, but the fortraks are awesome for towing, unfortunately they don't make them anymore, and even second hand they hold their value! You could look at a swb isuzu trooper, loads of towing capability but a bit smaller than a big 5 door! Also I believe the SWB mitsubishi pajero's are pretty good? and not big.

ok so def a thumbs up for fourtrak (but must check sills!)
although been looking for used ones and cant seem to find one!! i remember trying to find one last year and couldnt.... and going to have a look at isuzu trooper aswell, just had a quick look online and they look nice, not keen on getting another mitsubishi, nothing against them i just dont like the interior of mine, def preffered my disco on the inside!!

If you are looking at a Fourtrak, it MUST be the diesel version, our last one was tatty, but it did a lot more than 30mpg. My husband drives like a nutter and it still did nearly 40mpg. The Isuzu Trooper are very good too, a diesel one will tow anything, the one you want is the 3.1 TD. Do NOT buy a 3.0TD, which is the newer shape.
