Does anyone have experience with hock spavins?
My boy was diagnosed last week after being xray'd. The vet thinks it was exaggerated when he fell banging it hard.
He's on box rest with it being iced 3x daily, plus bute, with the intention of turning him out when the swelling goes down and resting him for 4weeks.
However.
Since starting the box rest the swelling is gradually getting worse.

Has anyone any experience with spavins? Treatments? How to get the swelling down? Longterm outcomes? I'm told its a very small spavin.
Feeling quite down about the whole thing.
 
Only that my horse just wasn't quite right so had a lameness check done - was diagnosed with spavins last August. He had no swellings at all . He had steriod injections in both hocks - twice in about 8 weeks, but since then has been fine. He was never out of work with them either but just gentle walking for the first few days after the injection and has felt pretty good.

Fingers x'd yours come right too with some tlc and time.
 
Gosh, there're so many people with the same problem, and such a variety of outcomes.
Do you think it would be worth leaving him out and seeing if it gets any better by itself...or are injections the best option?
 
my 15 year old mare has had it for 5 years now

at first she had 4 days box rest after injections in both hocks with twice daily walk for 5 - 10 mins then back in quiet work walking out for 4 weeks and increased time over the weeks

she does not compete to a level she used to but can do a novice dressage test , showing and does pop a WH course now and again

her injections seem to last 12-18 months before she needs more
have her on a joint supplement also
 
Hi mine was diagnoised last week also with mild arthritis changes in his right hock, showing early signs of bone spavin, he has been treated with tildren to try and help the bone growth and steroid injection into the hock, he's just come off 4days box rest with 4 weeks turn out and will have a further tildren in 6 weeks time... He came up lame very slightly on the right hind and was very stiff but today having turned him out can straight away see improvements ... I have the blacksmith coming out mon to make his toes short and give him plenty of width but no supportive shoeing is needed at present ...

mines got bone spavins. Hes had all the treatments! Started off very slightly lame so just had steriod injections and another drug they are trialing which is given every other week for 3 weeks. These worked for a few weeks and then started to slowly get worse. So had more xrays, scans and nerve blocks. He then had tildren and went on bute, started off with 2 a day and then onto the one. These also worked for a while until he still wasnt right on 1 bute a day. So we were left with the operation which he had on tuesday. Both hocks were done even though he didnt seem lame on the right but we were worried that once we fixed the left he would then go lame on the right. He is currently in the horsepital on heavy pain killers but can come home monday :) he has his stitches out in another week from then and then 3 weeks box rest. So hoping this works or we will have no other option to go down
