Small greasy patches

Help has anyone come across this before, my horse has small greasy patches over his back just in the saddle area, if I scratch them they come away easily with the hair leaving a bald patch underneath which looks quite sore

, when I first saw one I got the vet as I was worried it was ringworm the results came back negative, that was about 2 weeks ago.

I am continuing to find more patches though, any thoughts??

Yup - sounds like rainscald. Don't be put off by the name because it can also be caused by the sweat under a horse's saddle area. You can keep on top of this by cleaning and drying the area carefully after a ride. Once a horse has rainscald, pick all the scabs off (might take several goes) then Hibiscrub the area with a soft brush, rinse off and dry. Should clear up in a couple of weeks. You can also apply dilute Hibiscrub direct to the area and leave it on.
 
He is rugged or the symptoms would have sounded very much like rainscald thats why I'm confused as to what it is, will try and take photo. Thanks.
 
Can still get rain scald even if rugged. If hibiscrub doesn't solve it you could also try maliceb

Thanks all for advice will try the hibiscrub and see how I get on, would make complete sense that it is rainscald symptoms match.

ya rain scald can still happen if rugged it happened to my girl what worked for me was keep her dry wash twice daily for about 3to4 days with herbi scrub dry well and one day apply tea tree oil the other day apply aloe vera i was advised from the vet not to use creams due to these leaves a breeding ground for the bacteria to live in!
 
I have this with one of mine and I have to use a sheep skin numnah that I wash out once a week(or more if she has sweated heavily) to avoid any crustiness (can't think of a better word!) and I have to wash her down with hibi scrub or baby shampoo after every ride to ensure no sweat is left on her, even if she isn't visibly sweating. I always rake through the sheepskin with my fingers before I put her saddle on to make sure nothing is on there that would cause chaffing. This seems to be doing the trick.
