I know a 13hh who takes a 17" saddle and a 6' rug and another whose in a 5' rug and 15" saddle so I'm curious as to what size saddles and rugs people horses/ponies wear, especially in relation to their height.

14.1hh Highland.
6ft rug (possibly working his way upto 6.3ft)
16.5 inch saddle
Full sized bridle- well.. cob size with a full nose band and full browband :P

Why can't it be bigger? I'm just curious as to why the sizes vary so much between ponies of the same sort of height.:D

Because the saddle should not extend past the last rib, it is rare (can happen) for a 13h ish pony will have ribs far enough back to accommodate a saddle longer than 16".

I thought it probably was, so the rug size would then be down to stockiness rather than back length?

I fit saddles and probably 80% of my customers are ponies. I can't remember a 13hh pony that could take a 17" saddle, and our saddles do not have a long foot print. I have heard of one or two models that have a very small footprint and a 17" might be more equivalent to another brand's 16" but they are rare.

I have fitted one 13.3hh Icelandic who probably took a 6' rug or even longer, yet he could only take a 15" saddle, and that was our most compact model!

Models and brands all vary individually as do the length of horse's ribcages - they don't always bear any relationship to their rug length. If you know how to find the rear rib and track it up to where it disappears under the longissmus dorsi, which is the point to which the saddle xan extend - then make sure the saddle is back behind the scapula (get the points themselves at least 2" behind the scapula) and then check it is not sitting beyond the point of the last rib. On it is fine, but not more than a few mm beyond.
