I have a very sensitive horse (sheepskin everything- rubs easily and often reacts to bug bites!) who has recently become covered in itchy bumps across his neck, shoulder and rump. (Also causes some serious tail itching!) They have appeared since he has been clipped out and stabled, and also appeared at the beginning of last spring! I was just wondering if anyone firstly, had any advice on what they could be, and secondly, how to stop my poor boy from being so itchy and uncomfortable! I have Carr Day and Martin Kill Itch shampoo which I will bath him in tomorrow, but any other suggestions are gratefully received at this point! Thank you very much!

What has his rug been washed in? Sounds supiciously like a reaction to whatever detergent was used. Have you got a cotton summer sheet that you could use underneath his rug to see if tht stops him itching.

Other possibilities

Reaction to clipper oil, depending on how recently he was clipped
Heat rash, if he has one too many rugs on
Reaction to increased hard feed, now that he's in and clipped

I am dealing with the same thing.

Only, we think my horse is allergic to something (god alone knows what!) she has had absolutely everything cut out, is now on timothy haylage, Timothy chop from simple systems and turnout.
We have been to the vets, she is on 140 steroid tablets a day and 20 piriton.

I have literally been through absolutely everything, even things you wouldn't think of! Still can't get to the bottom of it.
I am tearing my hair out, she has rubbed her self raw around her neck, ears, belly and down the back of her hind legs :(

My horse has Cushings and the last two years he has had a rash of little lumps break out which are evident after clipping.

The vet believes it is rain scald or rug rot as a result of him getting too hot.

I really struggled to get rid of it last year by using flamazine, but this year thought I would try treating the area with Nizoral medicated / anti-fungal shampoo (which I have found works well at clearing up mud fever), and it has really helped - finally it's looking much better and he isn't itching so much now as well.

Mine is similar but not itching just los of hit lumps and be twitches. Been going on for three months now cut out everything except grass and hay......now we are cutting out the grass

Mine got this from an allergy to Lucerne/Alfalfa, he is now on Agrobs feed which have a grass base & no fillers etc and is fine, the lumps haven't come back.

Just a thought He is not being over rugged is he and over heating- my horse gets itchy bumps when he is too hot - even when fully clipped ? I also found that when I rode I had to put a clean numnah on each time as otherwise he would get the bumps too.

Same as above, two horses at the yard had this recently and the vets thought it was sweat from horses being over rugged. They had itchy little bumps that were in the end a bit scabby. Have gone now. Down south it's still 12 degrees so spring temps
