Hi All,

I have had numerous 3.5 tonne lorries now but have just bought a Range Rover and feel that the sensible thing to do would be to sell my lovely little lorry and buy a trailer. I tend to mainly go to stay away shows but stay with my best friend who has a huge HGV truck so no reason not to downgrade.

I am looking for some recommendations on places to do my towing test localish to Bedfordshire and the cost of doing it.

Also, if anybody could give me an idea of what my little lorry would be worth. It is a 2004 Renault Master coach built conversion, low mileage (89,000) good condition and barely used since I had it built in November 2014. Metallic paintwork and internal tack locker, additional lockers above the cab and bench seats in the back. Lovely little truck, we have been all over the country in it. Any ideas?

Also - any recommendation on trailers. I like the look of Equitreks - would want to spend a maximum of about £5,500.

Thanks for all of your help! x

You could of course get a vehicle with a lower GVW and tow with a down plated trailer if only travelling one horse on your current licence

What kind of car would I be looking to get? I've literally just paid for it so it isn't an option to buy something else i'm just intrigued!

But yes, would be travelling one only.

An Xtrail with a GVW of 2200 towing a Bateson Derby trailer down plated from 1700 to 1300 would leave a trailer load weight of 625 kg

I've recently down graded to a trailer. I've got a HB511 which seems pretty good. It was less than £5k brand new.

I find it a massive pain in the arse hooking up all the time, although it is easier if you have a reversing camera. I had a battered big old lorry that came with a lot of hassle so i quite like my trailer generally, but I don't think I'd be in a rush to change if i had a nice little 3.5 tonner like you..

Until you pass B+E test ............

SUPERVISING A B+E LEARNER
In April 2010 new rules were introduced for those supervising certain learner drivers but they only affected those supervising VOCATIONAL categories such as C1 C1+E D1 & D1+E where the supervising driver had those categories given to them for free when they passed a pre 1997 car test.
They do not affect those with a pre 1997 B+E licence who wish to supervise a B+E learner.

All B licence holders have B+E provisional on the paper part of their licence and can tow an empty or loaded trailer on all roads including motorways.

The usual rules apply when a learner is driving -
The supervising driver must be aged over 21
The supervising driver must have held a B+E licence for at least 3 years
L plates must be fitted to the front of the vehicle and the rear of the trailer
Correct insurance for a B+E learner
The supervising driver does not need to be insured unless they are driving
