Sorry I know this has been done before but my search was fruitless.

OK, my current tow vehicle needs to be replaced and I am considering my options:
1. eco car with high mpg and no road tax Volvo V50 Drive and possibly buy or regularly hire 3.5t lorry
2. buy 4x4 that will happily tow more than 2000kg

I don't have any licence restrictions and do about 40 miles a day on average. Not on a tight budget for replacement vehicle.

Thinking eco car and 3.5 is more economical, is this realistic?

Thanks

I love my little lorry, it's cheap to run and insure, fab to drive and my girl stands like a rock in it, but I think it depends on your non towing mileage tbh. If you do lots of everyday miles in a big towing car then it's going to cost more than nipping around in a little one - if the fuel saving from driving the small car will cover the tax and insurance (about 500 for both in my case) then the lorry is cheaper (apart from buying it obviously, as 3.5t are expensive cause everyone can drive them).

Best thing we did changing from 4x4 and trailer to 3.5t lorry! Lorry is so much easier - can just hop in and drive not hitching up etc, also my horses seem to travel better in the lorry. Reall useful at events aswell having an area to change etc rather than sharing a trailer with horse!!!!
Tax is similar to 4x4, same MOT and service cost too. I find it cheaper running about in my little fiat 500 and using lorry just for horses.
