Henry just retrieved his grown-up dummy outside

I know that this might sound like a really pathetic thing to be pleased about but it is a milestone for us as he has always been up for grabbing things, but not so much for bringing them back!

He did it twice, straight to hand both times

My family do not fully appreciate the magnitude of this event, so I thought I would share with you instead

There's no way Henry would give up such a prize at the moment - need to get retrieving really ingrained with his dummy first, then I'll get a rabbit skin and we'll work up from there. I am determined that I'm not going to make the same mistakes I have in the past and rush on before the basics are totally secure

Henry doesn't know it, but Otto is his role model (scary thought or what?

)

Jeez, that is truly terrifying!!

It's amazing that Otto does give them up, he just knows somehow! And for a dog that is sooo fixated on birds, once he knows they are safe with you he doesn't look back!

It's amazing how much of it all is instinct!

Well done Henry

Some dogs (Flyn included) get incredibly bored with dummies very quickly!! (no surprise there then!), so the next step is to sew on a couple of pheasant wings and then cover them in a pair of tights - once he's happy with that, then take off the tights so he gets used to the feel of feathers in his mouth - unless you are planning to use him for rough shooting I wouldn't worry too much about the rabbit skin

Well I was just going to use a bunny skin as they seem more easily available than pheasant wings

but am happy to be advised, will look into acquiring some wings

Tomorrow we will do more garden work, got to make the most of it while we have it as I have only a little backyard, then need to find a suitable place we walk for a retrieving alley - am wracking my brain even now!
