Since I got my new job I have also been asked to help cover after school club, so that means I do not get home till 6! So too dark to do pony.

So I muck out do water and get haynet ready for bed time, and thankfully my OH is willing to tuck him up for the night. I thought all was going well until ......,

Today, I went to put Levi to bed , and he stood still and would not go in, most unlike him, normally he follows like a little dog and is more than happy to go to bed!!!!

OH came and said ' he won't go to bed unless you give him some supper' !!!!!!

OMG, you should see the size of the portion he gives him, he even asked why I was taking some out??? ' he does have to go all night you know!'

This coming from some one who 'hates' horses, but yet thins I am cruel for only giving him hay at night, pony is on a diet, so only get 2 teeny weeny feeds a day to stop him looking for more food, and a hay net at night.

So in short mr horse hater has been giving him more feed than he needs, and has created a monster in a week !!

Bless him for helping, but please do not think you are monty Roberts just because I have trusted you to put him to bed lol x

Have to laugh, sounds just like my dad- he's a sucker and always makes the feeds twice the correct size, despite there being written instructions!

My mum once fed my daughters old horse a whole packet of polos in one go because "that is not much of a feed for a horse that size" She would not accept that a 16.1 TB would be happy with one or two polos as a treat.

My dad doesn't do the feeds, but he decimates the treat tub each time he is there, literally every time he goes into the feed room he brings some out. Now I know but horse's face is unbelievably cute (obviously!) but still. I've told him I won't take responsibilty when he takes off my dad's, or worse my mum's fingers.

oh dear my oh does the same soon stopped when i picked bucket up and threw half on the muck heap to him thats throwing money lol he soon stopped it

This sounds exactly like what my Dad would have of done! When he was left in charge of bringing Dee in for me he would say each time 'Did you know Dee likes biscuits/extra strong mints/lumps of sugar/bits of his sandwich' or whatever else it was that he had fed her....

My OH does the same with my boy. He doesn't like horses in general, thinks they're "nasty smelly things", but he loves my boy to bits! He can be far too soft on him, but I can tell my horse adores him, sometimes I wonder who he likes better when I see that look in his eye lol

Some years ago, long before I got involved in horses, my OH's mare suffered a bout of stress related laminitus (long story) and so had to be confined to a small paddock with very limited feed.

My OH was away with work for a few days, and so it fell to me to put the hay out for the other mare in our field, and to give Fol her very limited feed, which was obviously the highlight of her day.

Guilty does not even come close to describe how I felt, giving the poor thing a few mouthfuls of almost nothing at all. But I was under strict instruction of dire consequence if I gave her more.

I still slipped her the occasional sugar free herb treat.

Glad to say she is still going strong, and doesn't seem to hold a grudge (bless her).

About this time of year my oh and I spend a couple of weeks arguing about me being soft and bringing in the horse to soon. As usuall the horse is in and as usuall he thinks he should nt be. The upshot is that i won t be getting any help for at least a month bwecause I have made a rod for my own back. He does have a valid point... however when he comes off strike I Make everything ready for the night time. Invest in a bucket with a lid and leave it in the stable ready to tip into the feeder. My bloke would probably give the horse more food than me but he doesn t pay for it! He would think twice if giving him more feed meant more work..ie walking to the feed bin... If that doesn t work buy a clicker and train your man properly. If he is allowed to continue doing what he wants for too long you won t be able to train him at all.
