Small people on big horses

hey, i'm another shorty with a bfg! I've got a 17.3 and love him to pieces. I am a mere 5ft3/4.
I have gone from having a 15.3 to Bri and shall we say i will never look back. My old loan horse wrecked my confidence completely, i would rather ride a tb then her (welsh d). When Bri came into my life within 2 rides i started riding on my own, including mounting etc. I hadn't done this in nearly ten years, my bfg has been the best thing for me in years. What i guess i am trying to say, is that if you feel comfy and safe on board and can pull them back when strong; then why do looks matter?

I am not a shorty (I am 5'7) and I don't ride a huge horse. Yogi is 16.3 but he rides massive.

What I would say is that big hoses that are long backed DO sometimes take a lot of holding together. Yogi is a bit like this and it takes a lot of strength in my arms and my lower back in order to make him work correctly. So IMO it isn't the size of the horse as such, but how he rides.

I think small peeps on big horses look silly..but....if it works then fair enough. They still look wrong though

There's no harm is having a look. I went to see my current horse (on loan) and was told he was 16.3hh. I had said I didn't want anything bigger than 16.2hh but I went anyway. Had a sit, he felt big but didn't ride as big as I expected so decided to give him a go. When I got him home and got the stick on him, he's actually a shade over 17hh. I'm 5ft4! He's always been ridden by small women so he's used to it anyway.

I am so pleased I have him, absolutely adore him and wouldn't change him. I sometimes joke that he'd be my perfect horse if he was a hand smaller...but then he wouldn't be him if he was

The only time I find him a big horse is when he plays up, which thankfully is rare. It's a long way to the ground if you fall off, but it doesn't hurt anymore than falling off my 14.2hh

It also depends on the horse's build. Width matters as well as height - and stride length has a lot to do with whether a horse feels 'big' or not.

And, some horses measure tall because they have high withers, but they aren't really as big as they sound when you look at them overall.

If you are comfortable, your horse is comfortable, and you can get along with each other, size really doesn't matter.
 
If you like it go for it I am 5ft 4in and ride a 17.3 It has taken an awful lot of lessons for me to be able to keep him together and forwards (he can be a lazy sod)
