Hi, a question for people with small ponies and rear facing boxes: tie up in stall or leave free in stall?

I have two welsh mountain ponies c.11.2hh, and a recently purchased 2.5t Bloomfield 'long stall' box. The travelling equines face rear with no breast bar; they are separated from the living area at the back by a full height, solid partition with a jockey door. As the ponies are so small, and short in length, if they were tied to the tie up rings, their bums obviously won't reach the bulkhead behind them, so that in an emergency stop situation the full force would be exerted on their headcollars and therefore their heads. I could tie them to a 'breakaway' but I don't like the bungee ones (visions of pony being boingged! around the box), and I'm unconvinced anyway that a breakaway suitable for a 600kg horse is safe for a 300kg pony. My inclination is to leave each pony loose in her stall; they're too wide to turn around within the stall.

How do you travel your small ponies?
