Do you think horses are more likely to cast in small stables?
I have a rescue gelding cob who is a very fat 14.3
I have been bringing the horses in for last few days as weather has been so cold and my 25 year old really feels it when field is rutted and frozen.
Most of the time they live out on 6 acres with good grass.
Both of my stables are small 10 ft x 11ft max
They are turned out for 8/9 hrs during day if stabled at night
I am worried that the big fatty may find the stable too small and get cast.
This is a short term solution till we get past the current very low temperatures.
What do people think is the best thing to do?
He can’t stay out alone as he goes frantic.
TIA

I have a 17.1 in a 12x12 stable. With big banks. I’ve seen shoe scuff marks on the right hand side wall. So I do worry about him getting cast. Unfortunately all stables are the same size

I'm not sure that stable size makes too much difference to a horse getting cast. They can have a large stable and still lie or roll close to the wall.
I agree. My 16hh ex racer was in a 10 x 12 very traditional stable when I collected him. I put him in a converted cow yard which is about 16' x 25' ish with a large 1/4 fully bedded and the rest matted. He insists on lying and rolling so close to the wall that I have had to afix wall mats, because he was bashing his legs so badly, despite huge banks. I think the poor lad felt lost in such a big space, and lay next to wall out of habit.
