We're about to move livery yards and the box we are having for our 12.2 welshie is 12ft x 9ft...I know technically for ponies 10ft wide should be the minimum but I'm thinking given his small stature he should be ok in this? My plan is rubber mats and a full bed to allow for the smaller width. I think I'll also ask if we can go on a waiting list for a bigger one once someone leaves...or am I over thinking it? He will be out over summer and in at night in winter/when very wet etc. He's never got cast etc but does love a roll. It's an American barn style with bars between each stable so doesn't feel particularly snug.

We've given notice so are committed to going now but I'm having a mild stress about it being too small for him!

In the old days a 12 x 12 was suitable for larger horses we have one which had a 15.3hh in it , so yes he will be fine, my welshie 12 hh is in a 10 x 10 and absolutely fine. We have one large cob in one 12 x 12 and he is absolutely fine and happy and so is the owners.

My mare recently went from a 14x14 stable with outside pen to a 12x10ft indoor stable when we moved. She doesn’t seem bothered or care. I was super anxious about it too.. and she’s 15.3.

It will be fine it’s my experience that horses like rectangular stables .
I had a stable that was eight and a half feet by eleven it was used mainly be horses who lived out and where in in bad weather but the horses loved it it was vey nicely situated and had a wall round it it was very sociable .
Its gone now .
