I am worried I smell like horses at work- I do pony on my way to work. I go to the yard in jods/boots and yard coat and change in the car, but sometimes during the day I catch a whiff of horse and am worried I smell like the stables. Has anyone here ever had anyone comment on their smell?

How do you make sure you dont smell?

I have a shower!!

I only go to work a la horse if I am on site, as then I am not in a confined space, and people who work in offices are offended by smell, whereas people I work with outside don't really care.

It could be your hair, do you wear a hat? I work at a yard so smell all the time but I do notice my hair smells

Hmmm I was at work the other day and id turned out the girls on my way in, Katie splashed through the mud then nudged my bum whilst i was opening the gate, Kelly kept her feed in her mouth and spat it out over the top of my head!! By the time i got to work I had mud splattered trousers, a big mark on my bum (or a mark on my big bum!!) i had feed in my hair and mud in my ears!

Hmm im going to have the same problem in a week or sos time. I have had my share horse for about a month now but havent worked cos im a student. However i temp over every holiday doing admin/receptionist work and will be doing so over easter.

My horse is kept 25 minute drive from where i live so i think i would have to go and see to him in the morning, i.e put him out and muck him out as i dont really wanna be mucking out after i finsih work, plus i like to leave his bed to dry out. HOWEVER, I have the exact same worry, i would bring a change of clothes and perfume etc and maybe my hair straightners to go over it quickly in the tack room/office before i leave

but i am worried that i will still smell of horse/stables etc as occasionaly i can smell it on me when i get back from the yard atm, especially in my hair when i turn my head from side to side etc.

Maybe bring plenty of a good perfume ( I use Chanel Coco Mademoiselle or Calvin Klein Euphoria) and to be fair i think both of these smell so nice and are really strong and stay on that i think ill just douse myself in them, spray it in my hair as well and hope for the best. Maybe invest in some baby wipes to wipe over your hands/arms and deodrant and perfume lol and you should be fine, obviously make sure you change your shoes but im sure you do already

I remeber last year my horse had eye infection and decided that I would run up to stables during luch hour to put cream in eye, as I was in a rush I didnt change. Spent the rest of the day at work with my shoes smelling of P**h!!!! Thought I was so careful as well. Us horsey people are soo glamorous, and people think we are posh!!!!

As my OH always says..... "You smell like Hoof No. 5" I do the horse after work so I have no worries there, but one friday of the month, I start work later, so I get up normal time, muck her out etc, go back home for a shower, and then go to work. I do have the bonus that the yard and my work are only a 5 min drive away from where I live!
Can you not go back home to shower?

Wasn't so bad when I just had the one on shavings, I usually got away with it but now I have 2 on straw and 1 on shavings and I absolutely stink after doing them all in the morning! My clothes, hands, even my hair absolutely reek! I have to have a shower or at least a good wash before going to work! Even after showering I'm sure I can still smell it on my hands!

They are so used to me in horsey clothes at work that if I go tottering in in high heels and clean clothes they get worried. One of the men even asked me to change back into my horsey shoes He just couldn't cope with the black leather high heeled boots and felt more comfortable when I was back in my old muckers.
Seriously though I have a cushings horse and in times of high dependency I can be nipping to the field and stables - only 2 minutes drive away - multiple times a day.
I found shavings much less odour free than straw.
Hair is a problem but maybe just get into the habit of keeping it under cover.
Best thing is to have a trusty workmate who can just give you the tip off if the parfum de horse is taking over!

Is this post making anyone else really self concious?

I do what spider does and no one complains either... yet!

The only time I've caught a whiff of horse was when I mucked out in the morning in my work trousers by accident, after having (literally) got dressed in the dark and put the wrong clothes on. I was sat down eating my lunch a few hours later and realised I reeked of horse

I used to do my mare on the way to work - I work in hospitals so smelling of horse etc is an absolute no. What I used to do was shower and wash hair etc before going to yard - go in yard clothes with work clothes in a seperate bag that never leaves the car. Do horse etc. Go to cleanest place to change (at that yard the loo was immaculate!!) into work clothes - put yard clothes into different bag (used to use black bin liner!)also used to take wash bag with soap etc to top up and tidy up. Slap on make up and brush hair - try to avoid mud etc on way back to car. The most important thing is to keep yard clothes etc totally seperate from work stuff - kept yard stuff in boot and work stuff on back seat. Don't worry now as live at yard so do horse in jama's then go in to shower and change for work!!

I don't think so

I always do my girl on the way to work, have a coat on or top onto of my top and chaps if its wet. She lives out 24/7 so only poo pick the field. No one has ever complained, just wash my hands as they do stink, i do wear a lot of perfume, maybe that disguises it!!!

When I was at school one of my friend's used to go to the farm before school and her nickname was Stig of the Dump........

I think its definitely the straw that makes everything smell! Sometimes (especially if its wet!) not matter how much I wash my hands and face, I can still smell that Hoof No. 5 (as my OH puts it!) and ened up having a full shower including hair wash.... bit of a pain when it takes me forever to dry and then straighten my hair! I wish my hair was this "dry it and tie it back and it still looks fab" type!

to help stop the horse smell, where rubber gloves, i know it sounds weird but the ones for washing up, that way the ingrained horse smell that you end up with on your hands is not there

When Rosie was at the yard I would always wear old clothes and shower and change at home before i went to work. I hate the "Muck heap" smell your hair gets if you go anywhere near a yard, let alone a horse! The only time I came unstuck is when I forgot to wear gloves to change her poultice and had to put up with grim stinky horse pus hands all days! Eventually I found some white spirit and drenched my hands in that to disguise the smell a bit!

I wear a long coat and wellies over my work clothes and no one's ever said i smelt, i work with an honest bunch that i know would say something as well, lol! wear more perfume!

I work in an office full of horsey people and have never noticed any of them smelling (though most of us have those permanently grubby nails that never seem to come up white even after an hour in the bath).

I've got a pair of Emergency Trousers in a sealed bag in the back of my car, and I wear a different coat to work.

And remember, Febreze (or equivalent - I personally can't stick the smell of the real thing) is your friend!

I always worry about that so always get changed, i wear a hat so my hair dont smell and when i get to work i wash my hands about 20 times, put hand cream on to make them smell nice and i also have some deodourising stuff that i brought from boots for my hair as well even though i wear a hat.

And there is always a can of deodorant in my bag!!!

I usually do the horses early, then pop home for a shower...

.........but when I cant be bothered I make sure I wear my hair up and under a hat for mucking out......not a particularly sexy look, but I find the stench sticks to hair more than anything....

I cant really go home and shower as yard is halfway between home and work so I would end up driving an extra 30miles a day if i went home.

hopefully the issue wont be there when its summer!
