Smelly dog

My collie x is getting on a bit and starting to smell a bit doggy. He's a rescue dog and we've had him 7 years but in all that time we have never been able to bath him properly - only squirt him with the hosepipe when he's rolled in something nasty! I've seen ionic brushes advertised which claim to clean pets and get rid of smells etc so wondered if anyone had used them? Any other suggestions on how to keep him smelling sweet are also welcome! Thanks

I think from Wilkinsons you can buy bath rubs down wipes for dogs? They are wipes you can use to clean your dog without water. Also sainsburys do a grubby doggie wipes that i use after a muddy dog walk. They are very handy indeed.
