I have a 20 year old companion pony on loan. He's a bit stiff but otherwise seemingly in good form.
He lives out 24/7, usually naked and is groomed once, maybe twice a week and had a couple of baths over summer. He's very hairy and according to his owner always has been (so I'm thinking not cushings as no other symptons either).
Saturday mornings I have a freelancer come in for me and last weekend she said both of mine were shivering so she bought them both in and rugged them, they'd both stopped shivering by the time she left.
She put one of bigger ponies rugs on little companion, one I don't use often. When I took it off him in the evening it stank, really disgusting and like wet dog.
I presumed it was because it was a rug I don't use often and maybe it had gone away damp.
He then wore a brand new rug from Saturday night until Monday morning (obviously taken off day and night to check him)
That now also stinks.
So it must be him. Although he doesn't seem to smell if I sniff him ?
Can't really bath him at this time of year, is this a diet thing, grooming thing, age/health thing? Never noticed this with any other horse before, and having smelly rugs isn't very nice, just a bit concerned something might be wrong but I am also a great over thinker!
He won't be wearing his rug often - he's never worn one with his owner and it's only likely to come out in heavy non-stop rain like we had this weekend tbh.

It could be transfer from the old rug, maybe. But we had noticed one of our Cushings mares had an unusual smell, I think, as this is a good time of year to do it, I would ask for a Cushings test.

Could just be being damp and hot, and I know you dont suspect Cushing's, but I've noticed a funky smell with Cushing's in both ponies and dogs so I might be inclined to test

Definitely not hot or sweating and he was dry by the time I put the new rug on.
I think the reason they were both shivering Saturday morning is combination of not much to eat, not much shelter, big thick coats that got waterlogged. Only thing that changed Saturday night was a very light rug (50g) and both were much happier Sunday morning, and on the cool side of being right temperature wise.
Interesting that smell is noticed in cushings animals, didn't know that.
Can't see his owner being complicit in having the vet (even if its me paying) but I will keep an eye and definitely give it more thought. How much is a cushings test and pergolide nowadays?

My vets are approx £30 bloods and then labs fees on top, Prascend anything from £1 a tablet upwards..you say he’s hairy, is that all year round or just winter? He might be sweating in his hairy coat, they can’t always control their body temperature, hence quite a few people with cushings ponies clip and rug accordingly
