I have trouble cleaning it (he is not keen), so squirt the cleaner up there!. anyway this past week due to the weather he has been in more than out and its a bit swollen and smelly. Im guessing i may need to get the vet to sedate him. But just wondered if anyone has any advice on this, could it be a sign of something more serious. He had a small bout of this 9 months ago and i did my best to clean it avoiding the kicks! and the swelling went (again he had been in more than out though) could it be more lymphatic system related? thanks

my horse has just had this problem and it went on for months on and off we got the vet out a couple of times and he was on antibitoics then they finally sedated him and made him let it all hand out and they got two massive lumps of waxy stuff out the top after she had her full arm up there and the swelling went down straight away we do have to wash it every week now though

The more you clean it, the more used to it he will be.

Try warming up the cleaner before application and using warm water.

My horse also swells up when he has been stabled for a few days.

I couldnt ever get near Merls bits....he'd kick out...so everytime he had a wee I'd get baby oil out quick and squirt and run...he was never impressed, although on one occasion I did manage to get right up there and give it a good clean...but now looking at the bigger piccie he was so frail and ill - same week he went galloping off to rainbow bridge...poor boy!

Warm water with a dash of dettol in. You will need the vet to sedate him if he wont let you do it. They can get really nasty infections if you just leave it. Most horses I know love it!

I had to have mine sedated to do this - the slight swelling and pong went away straight after it was cleaned and I did get some hard waxy bits out of the top. The vet suggested trying sedalin next time - I hope it works because the bill is hefty.

I would try spraying the sheath every day with baby oil. As his willy comes in and out the baby oil cleans it. Just a few squirts morning and night to start with and before long he'll have a shiny clean, 'sweet smelling' willy, without you risking you'll life!!

I have also heard, (never been able to or wanted to get close enough to try), but a good handful of Vaseline pushed up in to the sheath and wiped around will help collect any grime and it naturally drops out! Good luck!!

Natural yoghurt (live) m'dear! Apply liberally inside (take it out of the fridge as it becomes more live the warmer it gets and also avoids looks of surprise/horror/rage on Neddy's face as you apply it.
