Hi,
I’ll tell you a bit about my pony..
His name is Mickey and he’s 3 this year he is a 13.3hh tradition coloured cob, about 2 weeks ago we moved ponies to summer grazing, I knew it would upset his tummy a bit ao I gradally introduced grass by leading him over to graze inhand for half and hour day the week before moving which was no problem. But now he is on the grass he has had very loose watery dropping constantly ever since which also smell quite badly, I have to clean his bum and tail on a regular basis to avoid the dreadlocked effect. He is fed o mug baileys lo cal balancer and a handful of dengie good doer twice a day, he had a scoop of mint at night and 2 scoops of garlic in the evening feed. Someone told me he would get used to the grass but im getting concerned now that it had gone on for so long. For the past week he had been strip grazed along with my other pony a Shetland who is fine. They are out during the day and in at night and mickey had a large haynet of hay over night. He is well in himself infact very energetic even if he has his own special aroma of poo… what can I do to help his poo? thanks

Oh it's vile!!

Product of eating too much I'm afraid, so you either tolerate it or reduce the grazing. One of ours has it whenever on grass (even if dry / reduced), he has worm damaged guts.

Perfectly normal on lush grass and disgusting on travel boots......

I have this problem with one of mine...there are a few things you can try;
1. Feed more fibre e.g. high fibre cubes, hay, high fibre haylage to help keep his gut working
2. Feed pre and/or probiotics to help get his gut bacteria working properly
3. Feed him electrolytes to make sure he hasn't lost minerals through diarrhoea
4. Put him back into a bare paddock on hay...gradually strip grazing him onto a little more grass each day.
5. Worm him/do a worm egg count as diarrhoea can be a sign of a worm burden.
Hope this helps a bit

Totally agree.

Mine had this problem for about the first 2/3 weeks he went onto summer grazing and he literally had the bit just below his bum blocked with poo in big clumps of it. Just cleaned it morning and night and left him... he is totally fine now

Yes, I use it and its very affective. Also use a high yeast feed. I use Anti-Lam on my boy, its really for ponies prone to laminitis, but its high yeast and fibre and it bunged my boy up in days. If you want details of where I get it from, feel free to PM me.

take him off the garlic as that can cause very loose droppings as it in effect destroys the gut flora needed. Pink powders then will help get the gut working correctly.

grass poos are very strong smelling and rather cowpat like. when it rains they tend to go loose again and then dry up a bit more when the grass drys out. but eventually he should dry up.

ok great i will take him off the garlic for now, although he was on garlic befor hand, i will take him off and see what happens, thanks x

It's totally normal on grass at this time of year - the joys of spring grass, I'm afraid, which lasts well into June.

It is a very ripe smell indeed, and a lot like cowpats.

I don't feed garlic to either of mine for this very reason.

SWUO had the same problem for a few weeks when the first flush of grass came through, although she wasn't as bad as yours, and I just doubled her dose of brewers yeast, which seemed to help
