This is Doddi, and this is her smile! She could scare you if you didn't know her! Anyone else have a smiler like this?

have a springer who does it a lot when you've been away for a while ;) first time she did it i thought we were about to become a snarling PITA but she's still her sweet, batty self ;)

Yes! Mine does it when she's reeeeeeeeeLally happy! Like when she goes to the beach she runs around doing crazy smiling and wagging! We are always having to explain she really isn't being nasty! On an everyday happy basis she just pulls her lips back a little bit and smiles, usually when you come in or when you rub her ears :)

HollieeB, can you think of any reason why your boy doesnt smile? That first photo of him is just superb :D

STR, Doddi is lovely - what a cracking smile :D

My old collie used to smile with her teeth - didn't help that she was prone to biting people too so had to be very careful to watch for the differences!

HI , I have a small terrier just for compan as my husband is away a lot with the Royal Navy. When I get home from work at about 5.30 he always greets me with smiles. I dont hav a horse at the moment as im in married quarters but i did have one when I was home at my parents. Would love another sometime soon.

Smiling is a generally a form of appeasement, although most people manage to teach their dogs to smile! I've known some people to also mistake it for baring teeth and aggression!

Hollieeb the pics of your lab made me crack up!

My mum's pointer does this! She's about 9 months old now and quite a character, always grins at us when we visit.
Those lab pics are amazing!

My two only use to smile if they went upside down!!!

Bonnie at 16yrs old can't hold this pose for very long any more, but in her younger days would lie like this for minutes at a time!

As would Tilly, sadly no longer with us

HollieeB what a brilliant photo that first one is :D

I knew a mahoosive rottie that did the whole 'smile' thing, he looked bloody horrible when he did it! He grumbled and growled when you stopped petting him too, silly dog!

Our doberman smiles too; it would look quite intimidating as she is 45kg but she wriggles around like a piglet at the same time so just looks really cute!

She also sneezes when she's really excited and happy!

Love the smiley pics!
My lurcher smiles but the lab doesn't, she does sneeze when excited though, on Saturday my son thought it would be funny to get her up the stairs as we were having a lie in (until 7.30 - don't shoot me!) and so a very overexcited lab landed on the bed - always on OH crotch too! - then we got rolled on and sprayed with snot for a good five minutes.
