I don't know how you get the grin ashgrove but to get the smiley type : ) without the space in the middle

To get your smilies go to the top and click on User CP, then go to Edit Profile, scroll down to the last box - titled Miscellaneous, change drop down to 'Basic...' then save.

If you use Quick reply click on advanced and you will get the edit options with all the smilies - post reply you get all the edit functions from the start.
