Smokers

I can understand polo ponies on a polo pitch being ridden with one hand, or western riders off road with one hand........

But to be hacking down a rural road or a busy main road with one hand on the reins I believe is uneccesarily dangerous.

Not only are you riding with one hand, but you are presumably concentrating on trying not to drop ash on yourself or your horse! Not to mention the process of lighting up. Do it in a menage or an enclosed space if you must, but on a road? Roads are treacherous enough for horses??

I guess it is similar to the debate about what you can do when you are driving a car. There are noises being made about smoking being banned whilst driving?

I may be mad (I have horses after all), but no i wouldn't smoke while riding down a busy road, nor would many other people, i imagine.

I save my nasty anti social habit for a quiet wander through the woods, on the edge of a field or other pleasant places that we can take slowly, and enjoy a few minutes to absorb some scenery with the nicotine

This particular lady I used to ride with had no qualms about smoking on any number of roads.........

Rural roads can be just as lethal as busier ones..........And I think it gives a bad impression to the motorists that we want to reat us with respect and proper care and attention when we are out exercising.

Yes , I smoke whilst riding , erm I really don't think the horse will breathe it in whilst out on a beautiful bridleway.

I avoid roads altogether because of the nasty car fumes

I've heard that smoking a joint around horses calms them and the rider too

Smokers are being punished enough. We should be able to sue the tobacco companies for the dreadful state addiction has put our lives in.

hahaha, why? You chose to smoke, nobody forced you!

Take some responsibility for your own life

So you avoid roads because of the car fumes.........and then poison yourself with cigarettes containing hundreds of chemicals!! You are joking, right

I could say the same (somewhat more accurately) about those who are overweight - but I wouldn't dream of it. Each to his own I say.

I'm on DAY NUMBER 6 of no fags and feeling positive. I have smoked on board before (not for years though) and it never really occurred to me back then whether other people would find that repulsive or not.

Yes, I'm joking !
Just a bit of tongue in cheek to those who think it's cruel to smoke around horses but submit them to exhaust fumes day in day out

As long as im not bothering anyone I dont care if the non smokers dont like it. tough basically!!!

I like to think im considerate and dont smoke indoors, near others and if i want to have a quick fag whilst cooling off in the sand school then its up to me.

I agree that it's your horse so it's up to you whether you smoke around them or on them, just like it's up to you if you smoke in the same room as your child. I personally don't like my horses being subjected to people smoking near them, my gelding always curls up his lip at cigarette smoke
smirk.gif
. I also can't stand anyone smoking in my yard, they get sent to the middle of the field and have to pick up their cigarette and dispose of it properly. My yard, my rules and smoking+hay/straw/bedding = fire hazard.

Like I said in my OP, personally I don't agree with smoking near or on horses but as a non smoker I probably wouldn't.

Another thing which I've come across with the smoking ban is whether it's ok to smoke in an indoor. There was a discussion about this last winter when people were smoking in the gallery of an indoor where a sj comp was on and others were complaining. A heated arguement took place and the owner of the venue eventually had to be called upon to make a decision. He reckoned that as when a competition is on it's not a place of work, so should be ok to smoke but that when used for lessons, the instructor is working so it's not ok. Then someone said what about the catering staff at the little cafe place at the end of the gallery, they were working during competition. After a long discussion the smokers got sent to smoke outside

At the end of the day though, it's the owners who were responsible and liable so they played it safe but I think it's a bit of a grey area where the smoking ban is concerned.

Yes I smoke, and I have been known to smoke on horseback.

I'm sat here LMAO at all the poeple saying "but you're concentrating on not dropping fag ash on yourself". It's like saying "how can you concentrate on the road when you're concentrating on changing gear?" LOL it's habit, you just stick your arm to the side and flick it.

I do wonder if anyone who's opposed to anyone smoking whilst riding (because apparently you can't ride with one hand) actually rides on the roads? Because surely if you do, the Highway code states you should use arm signals. I'd love to see anyone doing that with two hands on the reins...

The problem I have with smoking on horseback, is extinguising/disposing of the butt safely/considerately.

[/ QUOTE ]

smoke roll ups, Spit in your hand ( C'mon guys, if you have a certain very well known EDT , you know he does this too !!!!!!)
and extinguish . Easy

LMAO at the thought of somebody making a rollup whilst riding along the road. (I bet someone has too) That would really give the anti chuffers something to mutter about...

And so exhaust fumes give you lung cancer etc etc do they?

I am surprised about how many people do smoke on here!! Think it is wrong to smoke on horses, like the OP said, horses do get burnt, and I wouldn't want to ever put my horse in that risk, why should the horse have to suffer for a human's addiction....

Am I the only one who thinks its sad that smokers can't go 2 hours without having a fag and so do it on their horse or while mucking out?

Its all so easy for the non smokers to preach. (my sister is the worse!!). Think there are far more things in life to get het up over..

Why does you find it sad that we smoke riding? I dont! It is a free country after all.

I lob my butt on the muck heap. Its mine so its down to me. Have never burnt my horse and highly unlikely to. have dropped ash down my top whilst driving tho!!! lol...that will give the non smoking fraternity something to laugh at!

Someone smoking on their own yard doesnt affect you.

Nope overweight people do not kill me in the process, and there are many medical conditions that induce obesity. Having a small pecker and want to look tough is probably the one that induces smoking.

i went on a walk with someone who smoked on board...dont see the problem as long as you are aware! the horse didnt get the smoke in its face I did! And i got a nice fag end fly at me lit!

Or stress! I started at the ripe old age of 35...it was either that or have a nervous breakdown or drink myself to death!. Im trying to quit but not that easy.

Im sure the woman in the hospital bed next to me had a medical condition for her obesity...or was it the fact she ate a whole packet of biscuits BEFORE her breakfast!!!

She had the same injury as me, but because she was so fat, she couldnt even push herself out of the chair to use the crutches so will have to stay in hospital for the next 6 weeks taking up a valuable bed.

Even tho I smoke, I like to think I am considerate...i smoke on my own property, dont blow smoke in peoples faces and dont chuck my fag end into the nearest dry leaved verge ready to cause a fire....

I smoke but have never smoked on horseback. I am sooo clumsy - I'd probably end up in the same situation as the guy the OP posted about!
Also - I don't like the way smokers just throw their fag end on the floor. I have a little pouch for my fag ends if I'm out and about away from ashtrays.
I do believe smokers have the right to chose - it is a free country, but they should also be considerate around others.
I would never smoke at some elses yard or on somebody else's horse.
