I saw one of Irelands top eventers having a fag whilst showing off two of her horses at goresbridge sales recently!
I hate seeing chucked tabs lying around, no matter where it is.
smoking is obviously banned in enclosed spaces ie: stable blocks...I respect that, no problem
but it is entirely up the individual as to when and where they smoke when out in the open air.
Since the smoking ban, we are only allowed to smoke outside....but in cities etc, have extra ashtrays/recepticles been put up as a consequence.....No!!! I do always nub my ciggie out with my foot and put the nub end in my pocket no matter where I am...but I do know of someone who was fined £75 for putting there ciggie end in the gutter as there were no ashtrays around...![]()
Quite right too!
Just because there are no bins doesn't mean that you drop litter, and just because there are no dog poo bins doesn't mean you don't scoop it (or that you scoop it and leave the bag hanging on a fence/tree branch) so why shoul lack of ashtrays excuse dropping fag ends???????
You can buy special little folding ashtrays that are pocket sized so that you can take your litter home with you!
When it was made illegal to leave dog foul on the pavements, special bins were erected....why not the same with ashtrays:!!!
And if its ok to leave dog mess hanging on a tree or fence, why are you so bothered about fag ends on the floor!!
But litter is a whole different argument...and I guess I have gone off topic!
Anyway, each to their own with smoking, but I do think its up to the individual...I always move away from people who don't smoke and if I smoke on a hack, I always move to the back of the group as my horse is fine with that....
1. I didn't say it was ok to leave dog poo hanging on a tree or fence, I was saying that this isn't acceptable.
2. Bins for dog poo were errected in some places (municipal parks mainly) just like there are ashtrays in some places too. There are several around the city centre where I live, at the entrances to the shopping centre, outside lots of pubs and most office blocks. But the lack of a bin is no excuse for leaving litter/fag ends/dog poo on the floor.
3. Litter isn't a different arguement - fag ends are litter, and littering is part of the discussion as people commented that one reason they don't smoke while riding is the difficulty of safely disposing of their butt.
So what do you do with your cigarette after you have finished???? Sling it on the ground to create an eyesore and maybe even a fire hazard?????
Excuse me!!!!!! ......I already said in my previous post that I always nub out my cig with my foot and put the nub in my pocket, no matter where I am....
But the fact still remains that whilst we are still 'allowed' to smoke outdoors, I fully intend to do so! I have already said in previous post that I do respect non-smokers and move away from them etc...
this topic has been done to death previously and I guess everyone has to agree to disagree.......
I think smoking while on your horse looks terribly chavvy, sorry!

Ewwww, its bad enough to smoke, but on a horse it looks DISGUSTING. Can't see the attraction myself. Surely all you smokers CAN survive a ride without the need to have a fag? It really gives the whole horse riding scene a bad look, puts the 'upper' into class I reckon.
They claim animals can suffer from passive smoking too, and that if you do smoke around them its harmful, so in my opinion your selfish.
Such a shame that still too many people smoke. Those who are 'pub football people' and horse riders seem to be at the top end of smokers IMHO.
(even if I cringe when the 15 yo dressed head to toe in pink KP on her hairy pony who is blinged to the nth degree asks to hack out with me)
I do hope you make them walk a respectable distance behind you so that no-one actually thinks you're out on a hack together and know each other!!![]()
Ok, as a smoker I already hang my head in shame as a modern leperbut the idea of a horse suffering from passive smoking because a rider smokes out in the open air? Presumably nobody rides on the road if they worry about their horse's respiratory system that much because the car exhaust fumes may be dangerous and selfish also.......
As for disgusting or chavvy - well that depends on your perception of such things. I personally don't like bling, pink or KP clothing (to name just 3) but I try not to judge people in such a shallow way, by just appearance or MY standards, I prefer to be try and be a slightly better person that (even if I cringe when the 15 yo dressed head to toe in pink KP on her hairy pony who is blinged to the nth degree asks to hack out with me

Well said!!! (At my age, I couldn't look chavvy if I tried! lol)
