... so on my mission to find a new horse I went to a reputable dealers to view a horse today.

Groom / rider comes out with tack & cigarette in mouth then proceeds into horses stable and tacks up still with it lit!!!

OMG, just didn't know what to say, just stood there with my mouth wide open a little like this >>!!

Having been at two separate yards where there have been huge fires -one caused by the owners stupidity resulting in 6 stables burnt to the ground & 2 barns and several more stables severley damaged (fortunately everybody ok) and one by spontaneous combustion of an 80 ton hay stack which was contained by the fire services just feet before destroying stables, I'm just gob smacked why on earth anybody would take the risk

really annoyed with myself now for not saying anything!!!

It's complete idiocy to smoke near hay/straw.

Being as it is that most of us who contribute to this forum ride (or have ridden in the past) horses.............

So we get 6 foot up in the air on the back of a creature with a mind of it's own with a brain the size of your fist and partake in various activities that are liable to end in serious injury and being patched up by the good ole' NHS at taxpayers expense........

Are any of us really in a position to be "on our high horse(!)" about smoking and drinking and knowing the risks

;-P

(but yes, I agree that smoking near hay/straw/wooden buildings is foolish! Black Beauty anyone?)

I turned up at a BHS approved riding school, to get some more horses to ride before doing my stage 3 and the instructor wandered over, fag in mouth to tack up the horse in the stable, so much for BHS standards there then !
On a more personal note, I used to be a heavy smoker, never at or around the horses. My let has no smoking signs up, i wont have it in my place.
If i ever owned a livery i wouldnt even have a designated area, it'd be your car in the carpark, and there would be no second chances if caught smoking outwith your car. I remember when on livery, seeing this choob sitting on bales of shavings, in the stable block, puffing away," but its alright, ive got an ash tray" !!! Big signs up everywhere, the smokers did it if the owner wasnt around .... Stuff that I left
