My horse is ridden in a ported pelham and has been now for years. He has a very large tongue and this is the only bit that he goes really well in, I want to do some dressage on him and need to put him in a snaffle. Can anyone suggest anything so I have brakes and steering - he will obviously hang his tongue out of the side of his mouth but he hates a flash

I have the same problem with my horse. After trying masses of bits from rebecca at shop4bits we have been succesful with the neue schule hanging snaffle with a lozenge in salox. Apparently the hanging action gives tongue relief.

I had an event horse with a thick tongue and a hatred of nosebands (teeth done regularly, from a line of horses known to not suffer in silence) who did his dressage in a "correction" bit:

http://www.linkwoodec.co.uk/en-us/dept_16.html about halfway down the page. They're expensive and rare to see though.

Later in life he decided he could could wear a light, single jointed snaffle but he really did not like french links despite all sorts of people telling me he should.

I have just ordered a ported hanging snaffle through my local stockist from Abbey bits. They do a whole range of ported snaffle - loose ring, fixed ring, hanging snaffle etc. This is the Abbey website - website . You can't actually order direct, they only deal with trade but you can have a look at what is on offer and then speak to your nearest stockist. They have quoted me around £40.
