My 5 year old welsh Cob is currently ridden in a loose ring happy mouth snaffle. He is showing lots of promise under saddle, and is a complete show off, so I would like to start showing him this summer. The correct bridle for welsh showing is obviously a double bridle. As he is currently being ridden in a very gentle bit I was wondering if anyone can please suggest any bits or also tips that would provide my horse with the most gentle option for a double bridle

Thanks

Jaime

I only ever had my wlesh D in a loose ring snaffle when it came to showing - I put him in a jointed butterfly pelham and thats what hes been in since for showing.

I have just started to use a pelham - my young gypsy cob has a very short mouth with thick tongue and not a lot of room, hence the pelham. At the moment he is in a vulcanite pelham and later I may change to a metal show pelham so I can use a double bridle.

I know a lot of showing people who use pelhams rather than double bits.

I did M&M workers with my connie in a french link snaffle and did ridden M&M classes with a french link rugby pelham - looks just like a double from a distance and was perfectly acceptable. The advantage was that we had the french link on both.

We only used a double bridle when we got to elementary level in dressage.

I use a rugby pelham with a french link in my cob for showing, she is usually ridden in a nz hanging cheek with a lozenge, she accepts it happily.

i wouldn't try using a double bridle without an instructors advice. It's alot for a young horse to take, most dressage horses won't be introduced to a double until 6 or 7. I would say try a Rugby pelham, it looks very similar and you won't be marked down for it, horse is likely to take more kindly as there is less metal work in the mouth and you can be super soft on the curb rein.

my show cob harry also goes in a french link happy mouth for everything dressage hunting and hacking his first season of showing last year he had a french link rugby pelham and you would not know the diffrence neither does he
