Does it really do long term damage? Does anyone feed a greedy horse from the floor?

It’s the only way of slowing my mare down in nets, she constantly eats like she’s starved but the way she yanks the net is giving her a sore neck/poll ?

Is ahe tugging because shes hangry or is that just what she does? Can you give her a haynet but lower?
Mine are barefoot - I clip a haynet into the bottom of a half whisky barrel.

She is barefoot, the haynet is on the floor. Even if she’s had several kg of hay loose, she then goes and tugs a haynet straight after. Just seems like it’s what she does. ?

I loathe haynets and refuse to use them. When I had a mare who didn't know when to stop eating, I fed her hay from a haybar and gave her trugs full of oat straw chaff. When her overall forage wasn't rationed she learned to self regulate over time.

Haven't tried oat straw chaff.. I’ll invest in a haybar and buy a bag of that. Worth a try

How long is she out? Mine are currently not interested in hay at all when they come into the stable. Just a quick nibble and then snoozing.

I’m afraid I have had too many horses in for rehab from injuries caused by long term haynet use. They are totally banned on my yard - the only time I will allow haynets to be used is during travel.
I specialise in rehab, and as such I get a lot of horses in with metabolic issues etc that need to lose weight. Every single one of them gets used to self regulating and eating from the floor or a hay bar. Yes they may need to have their hay soaked, or straw mixed in with it, but they still lose the weight consistently.

I would ditch the haynet, and go for something like a hay bar, or if you’re really concerned about her gorging, something like a Haygain Forager.
