Have a horse who started snorting and tossing his head about in the field during the summer. Have had him since weaning, just started this summer he 5 now . He did it sometimes when ridden but not so much head tossing more of sticking his neck out and leaning on the bit. We were next to a large rape field so put in down to pollen. Vet came to check all the obvious, eyes, ears, nose, typically horse did not do it hardly when he was there his advice was maybe to give him steroids as he thought pollen allergy also. I was reluctant and said I would try other options . Gave him global pollen x and it settled slightly, took him off it after a month. Was not 100% but alot better and non noticeable in the field.

Bought him in this week ( stabled at night during winter) and it seems to have started again. more snorting than anything , have put him back on pollenx. Has anyone got any ideas and suggestions before I get the vet again as I would like to get to the bottom of whats upsetting him. Maybe dust particles ? I am clutching at straws really as to what is causing it. Thanks

A few years ago my horse had a sinus problem some of the signs included excessive snorting, leaning on the bit & occasional violent head tossing. The problems sorted now but treatment left his sinuses permanently damaged & he still snorts a lot more than other horses.

might if be worth getting him a nasal endoscopy? The vet will insert a camera down his nose and into his throat to rule out any irritation in the nasal passages. They can also go into the gutteral pouch as sometimes horses get infection there, although the symptoms you describe don't tally with symptoms of this problem.

My previous horse had this nasal endoscopy done as he kept getting nosebleeds.

Thankyou for your replies. It rained quite hard last night and this morning, he has been fine so far. Think I will monitor and go back to making a diary of the weather again , vet seemed to think my diary was a good indication of it being pollen or obviously something similar.
