I have just bought a new horse he is 5 but was unbroken and quite nervy i've only had him 4 weeks and am now riding him away ( slowly ) when he is in trot he is doing a lot of snorting / sneezing and throwing his head forward and I was wondering if rhis was tension or it was a alergic hayfever type reaction but he only does it a little on the lunge but a lot more when ridden - has anyone else come accross a similar problem ?

My mare snorts constantly on hot days I think it's some kind of allergy but it's only on sunny days, I've just bought some 'nostrilvet' to try, just waiting for another sunny day to try it out now.

it's not been terribly hot but there is a lot of butercup about wondered if it was a alergy or something but then why doesn't he do it on the lunge ?

Yes my horse snorts and rubs his nose on his legs in the summer. He also yawns alot when we ride past crops or trees full of pollen. I use Aloe Vera juice and this does help.

I would also make sure he has plenty of rein to allow him to balance at the trot and allow him to breath in though his airways, also make sure he is happy with the bit in his mouth [check gums every day for redness].
It can be an expression of irritation, we had [a nutter] who did this, he went much more quietly in a nose net, it is unlikely, but another possible reason.

My cob snorts a lot when being ridden, not so much in the stable though. He doesn't have a cough or any discharge so I'm assuming it's normal for him in the summer. I've only had him since February, I'll get the vet out to check him over if he does start to cough.
