Went out on a hack today, on a horse that I have never ridden before, any how we were crossing a road to enter a field where we were going to have a canter. There was another ride coming down the field so we held off until they passed, or should I say that was the plan!.....

We were waiting for them to pass so that we could enter the field and to go into canter and a woman in the other group starting effing and blinding at us that we should not canter on the stones.....we were walking past them at this time....

We said 3 or 4 times that we were going to canter up the side of the field and not on the stones but she would not shut up and listen to what was being said and all I could here her saying was effing this and effing that.....how bloody rude!

She should have been paying more attention to her own riders! We were none of her business what right did she have to start on us!

Sorry ranting over. Just makes me mad when someone is very rude and will not listen to what is being said to them.

I was out cycling a while ago (don't judge me - please) and I passed 2 women, wide and slow, as I would want to be passed by a cyclist.. I was coming towards them too, so I didn't come from behind, and this woman blurted out after I had gone past "effing cyclists" well.. as you can imagine.. I didn't really appreciate it, and made a comment on her "riding hat" which said "giro" on the side - a manufacturer of cycling helmets.. to which she responded "I got this from my tack shop".. I just laughed and cycled on!

I passed two more women the other day while out on my other bike.. passed really slowly, wide, as before, which was hard as it was a huge hill, i needed to get a pace on going up there in case I rolled back down

and they didn't even thank me!

Sometimes I feel that *SOME* riders are worse than some road users!

ergghhh, those are the people that give riders a bad name, i am always overly friendly to other riders when i am out! I feel like we all need to stick together like a sort of 'riding fraternity'!

To redress the balance a bit, I met a lovely lady when I was walking the dog who thanked me profusely for putting the dog on a lead and standing to one side so her horse didn't have to wade though chin high nettles to pass me

I used to share a horse and hack with a woman who stuck her fingers up at drivers who she felt did not slow down enough, I understood where she was coming from but I was still mortified

I agree, I'll get myself a tabard printed saying "One of the more friendly and polite riders in the UK"

Yes i think i need one of those tabards. I consider myself a very polite rider and make alot of effort to thank everyone who passes me.
But what angers me is the amount of horse riders out there who do not thank drivers, i just think well thanks a bunch for doing good for the rest of us, they dont help drivers feel any happier about our presence on the road imo. I have stopped, slowed down many a time for riders and nothing!! Its infuriating and i am a horse rider, so just imagine if i were a peeved off non horse person, next time they may not bother to slow down.

So to all you riders who dont say thankyou, you darn well should.
Sorry i have slightly hi-jacked your post in the form of a major rant, its just the thread has got me going.
I am not surprised you were peeved, there are some idiotic and snotty horse riders out there we could do without

Hi-jack away! lol

I always treat other people how I would want to be treated myself, and what went through my mind as she was swearing at us was "you give horsey people a bad name".

I did not say anything, the british stiff upper lip and everything but I really wish I told her to button it, but I am too polite

I wonder if the words 'Polite Rider' on a tabard might, ahem, be accidentally mis-read as 'Police Rider'.

I'm going to find out.*Kareef rushes off to make a tabard*

LOL! nor me! Have to think carefully about the colours, wouldn't want to get for impersonating a police officer. Fat chance with nutty arab generally reversing at 50 mph. Nee-naw nee=naw....

Oops sorry seem to have hijacked thread!

(This might be slightly off tangent, it's my own thoughts on something similar, and this thread fits with where to put it!)

It's a very odd thing this culture of bitchiness, competitiveness, rudeness and lack of consideration that there is in the horse world. I just don't understand why, I am a cricket fan, and love the game for the fairness, for the sportmanship, for how considerate but still have a bit of banter the players, crowd, umpires and commentators are. Horse riding is traditionally a fairly upper class sport, so why isn't there this same level of gentility? I would never, ever dream of being rude to someone at the stables or whilst I was riding.

Agree, I have ALWAYS tried to say thank-you to considerate drivers, cyclists, pedestrians etc when it is due. Else next time they may not care to be so considerate......

Also had issues with 'beaky' horsie people. Some of us are nice, some of us are nosey and opinionated, I guess you get that wherever you go though?? Agree with scribbles, supposed to be upper class. I always try and give people the benefit of the doubt tho an maybe they just had a bad day rather than got a stick up their bum..... =0O

You can be nosy and opinionated (god knows I am both!) but just also be polite. Good manners don't mean standing down from what you believe, but they stop poor behaviour, unsportsmanslike conduct and calm to what could be a beautiful sport.

It's seen in the showjumping (the only thing I watch so can comment on), riders are increasingly self-absorbed, and far too interested in flashiness than the grace of the sport.

Which is why I'll never bother to 'support' showjumping, and keep going to the cricket
