well i have had my lad for 3 years - he now nearly 6 - fully vet checked on purchase - anyways the 1st summer (got him in feb) i had him he got a green snotty nose - even to the fact that it looks like he is snotting grass or his feed etc - green snot literally can hang from his nose - sorry to be so discriptive - coughing occassionally but no breathing probs - had vet out - all ok no temp all normal he said was an allergy - monitor - if lost condition etc etc call him back - keep him out etc etc - soak hay - did all this and although his nose continued like this all summer his condition did not alter neither was he affected in any other way - vet out again in the novemeber for jabs and said how well he looked and that the "snotting" now gone -well every spring through summer we have the same thing - every spring i have vet back out - he says could do allergy test but since we have them stabled in country side next o a wildlife park it could be many things - i am lucky in that they have 24/7 turnout - i soak his hay but prefere to give hayllage - i wet feeds

but i am at wits end - surely this can not be normal - ok i no it not normal but you know what i mean - to be literally "snotting" grass at times

anyone have any more ideas - i plan to get vet out again in next few weeks as we started again but would like perhaps a little more opinions or suggestions as to ask him

many thanks

you say it is spring summer time that makes me thing it could be the pollen or a allergy to something have you tried a full head and nose net and maybe some pollen x or even local honey to see if this helps?

It sounds to me as if it is an allergy. It could be from the tree pollen which seems to be very high this year. We are having a similar thing with my gelding at the minute but his is more with his glands and he gets a watery nose. There are supplements you can get that help, I know Global Herbs do one. What is he like when you work him? Does he shake is head? I'd also try a fly mask with a nose attachment on too like the Equilibrium ones.

Does his nose smell? Is it coming only out of one nostril?
It could be a infection that is caused by teeth.

thanks guys -
does not affect his work at all he does not headshake at all - sometimes has the odd cough with it -as in will somtimes when starting a trot cough once or twice - not every time by any means - he is healthy in all other ways.
the discharge has no offensive smell other than whatever he is snotting up at time - ie grass or maybe even some of his chaff - has had teeth checked and rasped in last 6 month
someone once said in passing about (and excuse spelling here) oesophogeal pouch but i know nothing of this and the vet never mentioned it at all - in fact the vet has mentioned doing very little = tried a full net last year and made no diff

as i say we are in middle of country side - ok we have the beach which sends in some brisk air at times but we are surrounded on all sides by miles country and fields

My horse had her teeth checked/rasped in January, but her x-rays have just shown that her very mildly runny nose is caused by a tooth. She's off for surgery at Leahurst in 10 days.

Like your horse, she often gets a runny nose in Spring, but it has always cleared up after a few weeks (with or without antibiotics - we tried it both ways over two years) and has never remained all summer. She has never had grass coming down her nose, that would concern me.

I was almost ignored her nose this time (it's been a bit runny on and off since the new year) but something inside me told me that it just wasn't normal, hence why I asked for more tests. The antibiotics she had a few months ago, combined with a "clean air routine" had almost cleared it. She is fine to ride too. No coughing, no blowing out, no loss of performance whatsoever.

Has your horse been scoped to see where the discharge is coming from? I am not saying your horse has the same problem as mine, but unless you can get peace of mind from a few simple tests, you will always be left wondering what it is and if it's a problem.

hi it definatly sounds like an allergy our horse gets it every year and we give him piriton which is approved by the vet, does the trick and also garlic in his feed

I have an update.

Turns out my mare had two small sinus cysts, which have been removed with sinuscopy surgery today.

When she was at Leahurst yesterday, the first question they asked was if any food or grass was contained in the discharge at any time. This is clear indication of a direct link between the mouth, tooth roots and into the sinus cavity.

Have you had any x-rays done of your horse's head? These would be the first port or call, along with maybe scoping, to see if there are any pockets of infection anywhere.

Would certainly give you piece of mind. I thought my mare was ok, but it turns out she actually did require surgery and I'm sure she'll feel better afterwards.....even though I never thought she was offside before.
