Have the vet coming this afternoon, the old old guy we look after has snot coming from one nostril.
Its yellowy/green, smells vile (like that super sweet rotten flesh smell) and although he is eating, he appears to be rather depressed.
What is likely to be the cause of this? i am assuming its bacterial as its coming from only one nostril. The dentist saw him three days ago so its not likely to be his teeth (what few he has left).
More importantly at his age (he is well into his 30's) whats the outcome likely to be, given that he is not holding his weight well these days, and when we took him on he was infested with lice which again in turn had affected his general health.
Any one have any idea as to what this is likely to be?

My horse has a green snotty nose at the minute (started in one nostril but now both)... vet said most likely a 'viral infection'... ie a cold! He has a bit of a cough and is off his food as well, proper man flu! Got some anti-biotics and am feeding him conditioning cubes & sugarbeet and rugging him up well, still putting him out during the day (vet said best off out if poss with anything airways related) and in at night.
Hope he soon picks up.

Vet came, vet saw, vet went "oh yes, sinus infection"
Lil man is on equitrim granules, half a 37gm sachet twice a day (should be fun, he can smell doctored food a mile off!).
Review in 2 weeks but its a min of 6 weeks treatment, cant be ridden until earliest next summer in order to give his immune system a chance to recoup.poor lil man

Aawww poor little man - good luck in getting the medication in him!
My previous horse used to get quite a snotty nose in the winter but it stopped completely when we changed from hay to haylage and from straw to shavings (for another horse really as she had COPD) but it obviously benefitted my horse too.

Hi,

My 32 yr old mare was the same, turned out to be Sinusitis. Just had a course of granules and is looking much better, no smell or snotty nose...

I find apple juice works in her feed, the only way i can get her to take medication!!

Let me know how you get on, hope your boy improves soon.
