Hi, I have a 21 year old chestnut mare. Typical chestnut mood swings an all! I have noticed for the last few days that she comes in from the field in the evening with a snotty (yellowy mucus) nose. She is stabled at night so ive soaked her hay but the snot is very brief and clear in the morning? She has no other symptoms. No coughing, eating well, exercising normally. She has stayed in the same field with the same company for 4 months and I havent taken her out showing anywhere. What do you think?

Does it smell? mine had a tooth root infection draining through sinus and 1 nostril but you would notice the smell, it was horrible :-(

No not smelly at all. The dentist is due next week so im not sure whether to just see how she goes until then and ask him.she didnt eat as much as usual last night but I did worm her last night too... we extended the fence in her field and she scoffed that alright lol but again came in all snotty.

You could let her inhale some eucalyptus essential oil if she will, that clears the nose same as us with Olbas oil, peppermint is another possibility. When my mare was bad I was using a potato hessian sack with bran in the bottom, pour over hot water, add a couple drops of oils and attached to her headcollar for 10 minutes, but she is used to inhaling oil. If you let her inhale from a bottle make sure you keep bottle tightly in your hand with neck below the height of your fingers so she can't grab the bottle.

Mine gets very thick yellow mucous from both nostrils for no reason and at completely random times, but he has also had two nosebleeds in 6 months and is due to be scoped for polyps, the snot and polyps could be related. He started out with just snot for a long time until the first bleed, could be something worth looking into? For months we could find no reason for the snot whatsoever - tried every trick in the book - so hoping to get some answers from a scope.

Take her temperature as this will tell you if she has an infection. Anything but clear does usually indicate that there is infection present

I'd let the dentist know that she is having this problem.
