snow balling up in hooves

vasleline packed into dry hooves seems to work well. Some types of snow do seem to ball up much worse than others though.
I wouldn't be tempted to try WD40/engine oil etc - Don't put on their hooves what you wouldn't leave on your skin (someone wrote that on another thread and I think it is fab advice!)

Someone on here said human socks the other day - sounds like an excellent idea - assume you need to put boots on too to keep the socks on.

Both mine are unshod so no need to worry on that score...

I've so far tried grease, lard, vaseline and WD40 and nothing is actually working. Short of taking his shoes off for the rest of winter I'm not sure what to do. Tomorrow's plan is going to be playdoh. No ide if it works but someone on here suggested it and at least it'll make me laugh.

In Scandinavia farriers attach a rubber snow rim between the hoof and the shoe. I have found this very helpful to reduce build up of snow. The brand name I used was Huf-Grip, but I don't think they are available in the UK.

yep ive tried all those as well thats why i put this thread on cos they dont work surely there is something imsure in places like canada they dont keep neddys in cos of snow

I think the sock idea is a good one not heard that before, with boots on to stop them coming off, plus they will look really cute and snuggly warm and everyone else will think you have lost the plot putting the OH's sock's on your pony (would have to be his as mine wouldn't fit over her feet!!!) Can't see that going down to well!!

love the idea of socks, will try this tomorrow when I turn them out :)

Please post some photos... and let us know how you get on. if nothing else it may look funny :-)

I have a vague recollection of having heard of people putting on "socks" in rough materials (think hessian sacks) for walking their horse across icy areas, but I haven't heard about people using it against snow. The snow may get stuck to the sock as well.

the only thing that I have experience with actually really working is rubber snow rims attached under the shoe by a farrier :-(

Apparently they are available in the UK, i spoke to a farrier i know yesterday to see if they are avaiable and if they are not, whether he would be interested in getting some for his clients.

He told me they are supplied in the UK but not used as people would not want to pay an extra X amount "just in case" you get snow. Personally i would pay it after the last few winters in the UK. They are fine to stay in the shoe even if there is no snow, dont cause any problems.

It might be worth speaking to your farriers to see what they say.

:)
