Snow, Do you turn out??

Yes !!

NO!!!! Try not to turn out when its frozen etc incase they go hoolying around and slip!! If we had several weeks of now I might think bout it though.

Mine live out anyway.

When it snows we give them the run of the fields though. Don't bother giving them extra hay if it isn't too bad - they leave it in favour of hunting out grass under the snow

if snowing bad and no grass to eat at all keep in, try to let youngsters out for an hour or two though to stretch legs,

I have turned all mine out tonight. Mainly because, if it does snow, Im such a wimp I will be too scared to drive to the yard! If they are out, the YO will check on them!

Yes mine are out all the time, but they love the snow and sleep on it when the sun is shining and roll in it. But they do have a stable that they can go in if they want.

The horses love snow, ours that live out all the time roll and run about, and are more likely to be found outside than inside their warmer barns.
If you turn a clipped one out without any rugs just for a quick play they roll then get up and bronk like fury..
Anything should be fine outside so long as they are rugged have hay and no ice on the water trough.
The one danger is deep snow where they may inadvertantly tread on something buried or fall in a hidden hole.
If you are worried re their feet paint the sole with oil of some sort of grease, axle grease is brilliant at stopping the snow balling in their hooves.

Mine live out so yes. They love playing in the snow. I throw snowballs at Gyp and he charges at me!
Last year Gyp got Snow blindness though so will have to watch out for it this year, if he gets it again I will have to keep him in till it goes.

Not if its as cold as it has been lately, the ground is pretty much like concrete anyway.

Mine will stay in purely because we have a very steep tarmac hill to go up and down which makes it a bit dangerous leading in and out. Other than that Ive always turned out in snow, horses really dont seem to mind!

22 live out 24/7 in snow for 4-5 months of the year. 3 are stabled and are turned out first thing in the morning and brought in late afternoon.

yes, I've been okay with turnout, *touch wood*, as the ground's been hard I've been able to turn out at lunchtime and bring ine arly evening and the ground's fine. I guess turning out on snow with the ground how it is ATM wouldnt matter....lol, not worried about ponio, he'll be fine rugged up, it's the ground I worry about lol.

Because he has blue eyes the light bouncing off of the snow blinds him, it goes if him comes in. Thats what the vet said anyway. He was galloping about running straight into things and jumping at noisy etc, just like he was blind.

I think it will trash the ground if you turn out when it is slushy coz then it creates a greasy film on the top layer and they slip slide about like a scating rink. when itd snowing is ok i think.

Yes - they love the snow! They get turned out everyday whatever the weather, apart from the pony with Cushings who cannot go out when it has been frosty.

Keeping madam in and sane in normal circumstances is rare as she hates it so trying to handle an annoyed bouncing 2 yr old on snow is a non goer!! Her stable is open and has a huge pile of hay and a lovely think, deep bed so if she wants to use it she can but she has the run of the field and lives out as per usual. Last year she learn that gymnastics in the snow wasn't a good idea and came down with a bit of a bump so she now respects the snow and hopefully will potter about quietly and stuff her face on the hay stratigically placed around the fields and yard in the hope it won't get too covered in snow - assuming that we actually have any snow that is!

Mine will only be in if it's too bad to walk them down the road to their field. I would always turn out with a rug on in snow though as my pony once fell over playing in the snow and slid a long way on her side - I was so relieved she didn't catch her side on anything under the snow! I also know that the field is free from holes etc. having walked it today when poo picking, so no worries about snow covering holes. The road is always my biggest problem in winter though, it doesn't get gritted as it's not a bus route

Mine live out so yes.
I woudn't worry about the state of the ground while its snowy but it'll get mushy when it thaws but I suppose that depends on how big you're field is!!
BTW, I think we need a shettie fan club clique!!

Mine is out tonight, they cope fine, as long as they are warm and well rugged(if they need to be) then they should be fine. If you can it may be better to leave them out when it snows so that they are there when it actually happens and then don't get all excited when turned out and go galloping round the field and break a leg!
