The Alaskan husky dogs on Gordon Buchanan’s film “Snow Dogs” last night were amazing, hardy, hard working animals. Very shepherdy in looks, quite aloof but not unfriendly (they even put up with him hugging them which I’m sure they aren’t used to!).
I was surprised at how little coat they seem to have developed over generations given their sleeping conditions and how cold it is. When he brushed them though it was obvious just how dense and insulating their undercoat is. I wonder what their overall health and average lifespan is, given their relatively hard life and fairly basic nutrition.

It was a very interesting programme and I was amazed at how much work the dogs are capable of and how many calories a day they need to keep going. Some of the dogs looked a bit uncomfortable with the hugging but the little submissive dog just lapped up the attention. I would try it on a straight run but not going through forest as he did.
 
My family had two Alaskan huskies (both intact males!) when I was very small and they were very affectionate, they used to howl with excitement when I got home from school. The neighbors were deathly afraid of them because they were very wolfy looking but they had the sweetest and gentlest of temperaments. Sadly, I don't how long they lived because my parents made the decision to rehome them when we moved from the country to the suburbs and there was no longer a place to exercise them.

thanks for the reminder about this prog. I watched it on iplayer.

I too would like to give it a go but I would like to start off in walk, progress to trot and then a slow canter. It seems the dogs start off in full gallop and eventually, presuming you are still on the sled, slow down only when they are tired. :D:D
