Hi,

My mare always has a bald patch where her rug rubs her mane. I am thinking about buying a hoodie, however, I have a few concerns. Do you use the hoodie when it rains? Can you buy water proof hoodies? On the market there are a couple of designs - the hoods that cover 1/2 to 3/4 of the face or the hoods that just cover the ears. Which would you recommend? I also would use it to train her mane to lie on the correct side.

Thanks
Ruth

Ive got the turnout hood. It did its job (my horse had a neck injury that I wanted to cover up so he could be turned out) but I wouldnt want to use it long term, everyday. I found it rubbed my boys shoulders but he is prone to it and I think it would possibly rub his mane if left on too long.

Positives.. it made his coat very shiny!

personally i would stay away from full face ones as i think they are very dangerous, a pony at my last yard (quite nervy anyway) had one and it slipped so he couldnt see... he freaked and wouldnt let anyone near him, in the end it took about 10 of us to herd him into a stable (not easy as meant had to go through 2 fields and yard) inorder to catch him and sort him out. maybe there was a problem with the fit but it seemed to fit well when put on, i personally just wouldnt risk it though!

Cheaper option - sew some silk on inside of neck cover.

Thanks for your replies.

Where could I buy a waterproof snuggy hood from?

Bonita - I am of the same opinion as you with regards to full face hoods.

I've got a snuggys hood & I think they're meant to be showerproof? I totally love mine - my horse is out 24/7 & clipped & it keeps him really warm & clean.

I find it stays in place really well, but I think that 1 or 2 other people have had issues with them. My horse lives at home, so I can check him a lot. Not sure if I'd leave him in a full face if I was only seeing him once a day.

If you get one, get the one with a zip. They are far easier to put on.

I liked my Snuggy Hood Turnout one but must say the zip broke within 2 days! Its sitting here waiting to be sent back to them for fixing

Otherwise I use a W'rap Hood by Wunderwear. Got it from the USA but its a great design where nothing could cover the eyes.

I bought two Snuggy hoods last year, and they both broke fairly quickly. They've both come adrift around the zip area (but you can get ones without zips I think, which might be better) and the strappy bits also broke.

Also, one horse managed to break the straps and got it over his head. He had to be rescued by a nice lady who spotted him staggering about the field! Thankfully, he didn't go bonkers, but it could have been disastrous.

So, decided not to use it on him again, but continued to use one on the other horse, until I saw the horse in the next door field trying to pull it off him. It had gone right over his head, and he was almost sitting on his bum tring to pull back!

Quite funny to watch, but potentially could have caused a major panic, so now I don't use them at all, and have come to the conclusion that they are a bit dangerous.

Good for keeping plaits clean in the stable though...

I love my snuggy turnout! I have a pull on version with integrated ears as our mud is clay that sets rock hard and doesn't brush/wash out. It is not totally rain proof but it keeps a clipped neck and face warm and drier.

Getting the size right is really improtant as it should be a snug fit, mine has never slipped or rubbed. I wouldn't put one on a particulary flighty horse or turnout in a field where there is anything they could possibly snag it on (my fencing is electric). I would not leave it on for more than 12 hours a day either as they need a break from it (he loves a good mane scratch when it comes off at bed time!) also it's important to wash regularly as grease quickly builds up, it will wash and dry on a radiator overnight in time for morning turnout.
