I have put merlin out in his hood and feel bad. It hasnt slipped which was my main concern, but where its raining, the hood is a bit wet.

Now I know they are not waterproof, but will he be cold in it???

It is under a neck cover, but obviously the rain kind of creeps down the hood under the neck cover.

He wasnt terribly wet when I took it off, but I felt bad putting it back on wet.

Does he look a bit of a numpty with the ear bits on???

lol poor Merlin!! My horse would have those ear bits off in a second just because they look so silly

I have always agreed with the notion that the worst type of cold is when you can't get dry. My 4yo and 3yo are both dropping weight, today they look worse than ever as they got wet last night then the wind has been blowing and they can't get dry because of the showers. I wouldn't like to put a non-waterproof hood on as it'll just hold the wet and cold against him, best wet and dirty and better able to dry, IMO.
Then again I would never turn out in a hood anyway, far too dangerous.

Ooops dont know how two posts got going together!!!

Thing is, is it any worse than wet fur, ie no rug at all???

Oh I feel bad now, its just that his head gets soooooo muddy that I cant ride him without keeping him in for hours to dry and even when it is dry I cant brush his ears coz he hates it

But do they not dry with the horses body temperature... like a rug will or indeed the horses coat???

He has hay and plenty of grazing to keep him topped up

Please tell me that I am not going to kill him overnight

My boy is fully clipped and is out in his snuggyhood whatever the weather. They are actually showerproof, and the full bodies are designed to be left on in the summer whatever the weather.

If you read the instructions it says to put them on slightly damp after washing (I have no idea why...)

My boys is hardly ever even damp underneath his hood when he has come in after rain, and he's never been cold, and he really feels the cold. So Id say he'll be just fine!

Modern turnout rugs are breathable, that's why they (mostly) dry on the horse. The hood should dry eventually.

You're unlikely to kill him, don't worry! I'd be FAR more worried about it slipping...

My snuggyhood dries much faster than my turnout rug. Quite often the hood will be dry and the rug wet. It's just the material it's made out of, it's not thick and doesn't absorb water that much. It also helps most horses stand bum into the rain probably!

I've had a snuggyhood on my horse for 5 years and its has never slipped. 6 of my friends also have them and have never slipped. If they fit properly they don't. They are much better designed than other hoods on the market and cannot be compared.

I did worry all of last night that it would slip as he rolls for England!! , but it was checked several times and was fine

Oh well its not raining now so hopefully he will dry before it gets any colder

will have to adjust the ears though, as they are a little too long and floppy and they might make his own ears sore from flopping over??

Can see I will be taking the sewing kit up there tomorrow

I have to say...my OH says he looks like a bit of a court jester.

I would say that hood is not going to dry anywhere near as well as the coat, and could cause a chill.

Might as well just keep the hood for jousting practice!!

Thye ears are the sleeves from my old fleece. But they need doctoring to make them less huge.......

Sadly he does have a mirror but strangely refuses to look in it when dressed as a reindeer!!!

May need to cover mirror up!!!

My friend used a snuggy hood on her horse all winter and she was fine. They are made from a man made matierial which dry really quickly with the horses body temperature.
I think Merlin will be fine.

I'm pretty sure snuggy hoods reccomend you wash them in the nuuwax rug waterproofer stuff to waterproof them. It might be on the website (FAQ's?)

He will be fine, mine's been out in a snuggy head in the worst of weathers and comes in pretty much dry. He has it off in the day to give his skin/coat a chance to breathe and I hang it on the door to dry. Main thing is you wash it frequently.
