Discovered last night that my horses Snuggy Hood Sweetitch set had been ripped off my horse (and shredded) over the fence by a bunch of youngsters in the field next door and when I went to the incredibly wealthy family who own the field and horses they got really anti with me and quite obviously have no intentions of offering to get it repaired. I had to climb over the fence into their field this morning to retrieve the remains! The owner of the lands son said he would speak to his father but he didnt think he would be happy!! Well I'm not either actually, I'm an "on the breadline" horse owner and had to save up over £200 to buy the rug in the first place. He also said he was going to speak to my "boss" Kerrie (yard manager). I said she's not my boss!! There havent been any horses in that paddock next door for over a year now, my horse has been in that field for 2 years and has not damaged his rug at all!

Rant over now!

What would you guys do?????

Any suggestions welcome!

are you serious?

In order for your horses hood to have been ripped OVER the fence he must have been standing with his neck hanging over the fence!

At a push, if it was a horse in the same field it may be reasonable to ask another owner to chip in for replacement cost - but if your horse is daft enough to stand with its head over the fence whilst his rug gets shredded thats hardly your neighbours fault.

Horses are horses and rugs get damaged, a serial rug ripper should be turned out alone, fair enough, but fromt ime to time stuff gets damaged.

If someone came to my door asking me to pay for a rug which they claim my horse ripped over a fence i'd not be impressed either.

If your horse is presumably fighting / talking to strange horses over the fence i'd be more concerned about him getting caught in it - so i'd personally put up a secondary line of electric fencing to prevent it.

i dont think there is anything you can do, apart from just *hope* they do the decent thing :-/ you cant prove that the youngsters did this (i know they did its just a thought) etc. i am sorry but you know what people are like :-(

the idea of putting a secondary line of fencing up is a good one. It's more preventative so is not going to help you with the damage already done, but will hopefully prevent any more damage occuring.

Sorry to hear about the damage though. it's so frustrating when something you have saved up for gets damaged.

Sorry for your loss, but I don't really see how the other horses' owners can be held responsible - I mean it's not like they were egging them on, or training them to entice your horse to stick it's head over the fence and be denuded is it?

Yes I am serious, very serious!!!!!!!!!

If your car was parked in your drive and my car was parked next to yours in my drive and my kids damaged your car with a few choice dents and scratches you'd be wanting me to pair for the repairs, you wouldnt be saying s**t happens for time to time I'll take it on the chin and pay for the repairs myself would you?

I know what you mean but I was just hoping for a goodwill gesture from a family worth millions to go towards having the rug repaired as I work very hard to look after my horse as well as I can and its heartbraking when something like this happens. He was lucky he didnt kill himself, he was found with the head part of the set covering his head so he couldnt even see where he was!

Advice? Live and learn, then get some secondary fencing put up.

I've lost count of the number of rugs I've had trashed by other people's youngsters. For example: http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=461321. Horses will be horses and the other people's horse/s weren't physically over the fence 'trespassing' in your horse's field. Nothing you can do IMO. If you don't want your horse hanging his head and neck over their side of the fenceline (maybe he's seeking company?) then put up a length of electric tape. That's what I had to do after my Rhino got shredded. Job done.

Sorry, but I don't think you have a leg to stand on with regard to trying to get money off them. Could your horse possibly have caught the rug on the fence, pulled back and then the youngsters grabbed it and ran off laughing?

Honestly, I wouldn't even have the nerve to have a go at a fellow livery, let alone a neighbour!

Have only read the first few replies but just to let you know snuggy hoods were selling the sweet itch hoods/sets at a seriously reduced price within the last couple of weeks - someone posted on horse gossip just in case anyone was interested in buying them.

The general consensus was that they were total c**p and no wonder they were being sold off cheap as they just disintergrate.

If you search on HG you will probably find the thread - you could then either buy one in the sale or perhaps have a word with snuggy hoods as there seemed to be quite a few complaints about this item.

Good luck.

are you still serious?

it would hardly be the same situation would it - 2 fairly big differences:-

1 - kids know that damaging a car is wrong - horses don't know that damaging a rug is wrong.

2 - in that situation your kids would be on my property - your neighbours horses weren't on your property.

If 2 horses in neighbouring fields are playing / fighting over a fenceline and one gets hurt / rugs gets damaged, i would not expect the other person to pay up. Nobody was forcing your horse to stand at the fenceline, and the neighbouring horses were not in your field.

It's one of those things that happen, nobody is to blame.

I agree - its hard luck but thats horses. I dont rate snuggy hoods sweet itch rugs at all, one of my work colleagues horses managed to get a sweet ithch hoody half offf over night, panicked and trashed metres of fences. She has gone back to the original and best - boet. I have one that is now 7years old and still going strong.

Sounds like your friend bought the wrong sized rug or something. We use sweet itch hoodies and they never move. Ours have done 3 years each so far. Unless my horse had really bad S I I wouldn't bother with a boet.

I agree too though, that although its annoying, its not the other owner's fault or responsibility. Its not like the horses were turned out with yours. As someone said, your horse stood there and let them chew him/her.. Definately another vote for a line of electric fencing (the taller the better) to stop them loitering around! Its a shame though, they'd probably been trying to groom and play over the fence..
