I have one of their rug liners and it's excellent but it doesn't cover the tummy, so I'm thinking about getting one of their winter under rugs or a lycra body rug. It would be to go under a 50g TO for a horse (cob x hippo) who's out 24/7. The lycra rugs are cheaper - but am I being a cheapskate here?!

If anyone uses either of the linked products I'd really appreciate a quick rundown of their relative merits....

IIRC the winter under rug is made of the same material as the sweet itch rugs. They stretch over time, so if you;re between sizes go for the smaller. I use my horse's sweetitch ones under his rugs and it works well to keep his belly clean. The velcro lasts a few seasons and then will need to be replaced.

If the winter rug comes with a tail wrap I'd cut it off, leaving just the flap. They damaged the top of mine's tail and he now has a line of white hair. (he is black)

The rugs can collect static, so I wash them with fabric softener. My horse was, quite rightly, offended at being zapped with his own electricity!

If you roll them as you take them off horses quickly learn to stick their heads through and it makes putting on much quicker. I have the zipped hoods and mine sticks his head through for those too.

Hope that helps!

I have one, (6'3 and for sale ;) )
They are a bit of a hassle to put on and off i thought but I bought it for a TB who hated mud being scrubbed off him so it in theory should have been great but I couldn't be bothered and found it slid back a but the few times i did use it getting tight on his chest.

ooh - what exactly is it and how much are you wanting for it? I usually buy my cob 6'6" rugs because he has an enormous chest (the rest of him is 6'3" sized) but if they're fairly stretchy it might work....PM me?

I use the turnout headless hood and the petticoat liners I think the turnout hoods are the same material as the winter rugs and they do stretch so agree go smaller, Louis is 15.3 Arab but quite substantial in build and I use a medium on him the size up was too big.

Thank you. I have one of the silky liners in a 6'6" and it's great - hangs off his bottom a little more than necessary, but it fits well round the shoulders - I accepted that as a necessary compromise for something that doesn't have stretch in it.

ETA - I did try a couple of turnout hoods - zipped and non-zipped - but they were ridiculous on a cob! They'd barely do up around his massive chest but were so long that I'd have needed to lop eight inches off the end of the neck  I sold those....

I have 6'3 silky liners for Louis as they don't stretch, I used to get made to measure sweet itch rugs for my warmblood years ago which is the same material as the snuggy stuff, she trades under cornerstone browband on ebay, you could get her to make you the equivalent of the winter rug, if you feel the off the peg snuggys won't fit her stuff is really good.

I had similar problems with Grace she was short in the neck but wide especially at the base nothing tended to fit her.
