Snuggy hoods

Please help, the more I try to think, the more baffled I get.
Roos rugs have rubbed her mane so badly that she only has the top half left, and one of the rugs also rubbed her shoulder.
So am looking at getting a snuggy hood for next winter so she can grow a mane and not have any rubbing.
However I'm not keen on the fact it covers their face, especially as she lives out. I would much rather it just went to the ears, is there anything like that on the market? Or do you think I could cut it just above the ears and stitch it up, with it still sitting in place?
I sound like a complete numpty I know but please help me
 
I bought a snuggy hood for our mare for the reasons you are thinking. It rubbed her mane completely out as well as half the hair off her face. That was within 3 weeks.
I sold it on ebay.......
 
Try a cheap alternative first.... baby oil!! I started putting it on my geldings mane (and tail) faithfully from January and he stopped losing his mane. Also has helped greatly with keeping muck off his tail. Tip I got off this forum and between me, horse and one of my dogs, we are getting through a lot...

I am hoping for a summer sale to buy a snuggy hood - with face, zip and ears! but thats because I own a gray who is loves to bury his head in mud!
 
I think you can get one that comes to just behind the ears, it's either a Weatherbeeta or a Roma one from Equestrian Clearance, will just go find a link for you... :)
 
Having seen the injuries a horse did to himself when his hood slipped over his eyes in the field I would never turn a horse out with a full face hood. I'd much rather lose some mane - it will grow back. Failing that have a TO without a neck cover.

It seems to be the detachable necks on TOs that cause the majority of mane rubs. One of my horses has a bib on under his TO as his shoulders do get rubbed without it. I saw a bib advertised recently with an extension piece that goes over the mane to protect it - don't know how effective it is.

Don't know whether what you are suggesting would work as the cover might bunch up round the base of the neck but it could be worth a try.

eggs: It wouldn't bunch down as I would keep the holes for the ears if I "altered" a full face one. Thats the only thing that worries me about the one in that link, I'm not sure it would stay up :S Worth a try though
 
I had a snuggyhood on my old boy for 7 years. There are several horses up my yard that also wear them. They are brillliantly designed (as long as you get the right size I'm sure) not one has ever moved one inch! They're excellent, and if my new horse wasn't dark bay, so doesn't need one, I wouldn't hesitate in buying another.
 
I use a Bossys bib under all her rugs to avoid shoulder rubs and keep her mane full by using indoor and outdoor rugs with detachable necks. Works for my girl :)
 
ive got all four of my horses in snuggy hoods and they stay put , a brilliant invention. I spray the inside of the hood with show sheen so it glides over the mane,
