I took G out for his usual walk today, he's been stabled for the last fortnight for a number of reasons but goes out twice a day for inhand grazing and a long walk.
Some of you saw the photos of him when he arrived, and he's not lost any weight
frown.gif
. But it's only been a month and I'm doing everything possible to help him.
It'd been windy all day and G was being a prat, as they do. He'd been out in the paddock for an hour and was full of it. We usually use a local lane, as it's quiet and plenty of wide verges.
A lady drove past in a disco with a small trailer on it. G got a bit silly as it was a tinny trailer and it's the one thing that scares him. I managed to hold onto him through his rearing and prancing. (Strangely he's had one go past him when my eldest was riding him and didnt bat an eyelid).
on our way home this lady drove past us again, minus trailer, and stopped. He was having another little graze on the verge and I was just standing holding him.
I'm so used to people stopping when we're out. He really is like a tourist attraction, lots of people come up to us and want to say hello to him
grin.gif
.
I turned around and this lady just walked up to us and started ranting. Saying he was obese and that I should be ashamed of myself for keeping him that fat. She said she'd seen him being ridden the other day and he was struggling to trot
mad.gif
. She then bent down and grabbed his foot, and said he had fat legs and that his feet were 'disgusting'. She said I shouldnt have him on the road unshod.
At this point I just blew. Told her to **** off and what did she know. Apparently she had a livery yard and asked where I kept him as she wanted the ILPH to look at him. Didnt I know it was cruel to have a fat pony?
mad.gif
.
I didnt even try explaining why he was fat (not that I had a chance), I was just so angry and upset.
In the end I just grabbed him and walked off...(so fast that G was doing his fastest trot to keep up) and lady got back in her disco and drove past us...and b***** tooted!!
I am afraid when we got back I gave ahim his favourite feed of chaff and apple juice, and two carrots with a crumbled polo on top
frown.gif
. Bad I know, but I was so angry and upset.
I'm worried about him enough without comments like this.
I've had someone else comment about how he shouts when he's in the field, making me paranoid about turning him out.

What right do other people have to comment on an animal they have no idea about?

btw, for thiose who don't know, this is a 9.3hh shetland!!

oh dear, some people just cant keep their big mouths shut can they
mad.gif

i know how you feel having a welshy who gets fat on nothing, huge hugs xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Well I hope she does call the ILPH and they B****ck her for wasting their time, maybe then she will learn to be less rude.

Don't blame you for being upset but you know you are doing the best for him.

what goes around come around. If she puts that much energy into abusing people she doesn't know then she'll give herself an ulcer

My blood started boiling reading this. Apart from a horsey person hooting whilst driving past a horse - inexcusable behaviour alone - what right does she have to come and invade your space and start handling your horse??!!

mad.gif

You are clearly doing the best thing for this pony by exercising him.

Jeez........ some people will just see what they want to see, and have no bl**dy intention of finding out the reasons why!!! Glad you told her to F off!!!

its a shame she doesn,t report peoples horses who are in need of the ilph and rspca, however she was out of order speaking to any horse owner like that.

I didnt tell her where I kept him. Even though I was just opposite the yard, she wouldnt have guessed as it's a farm.
i'm going to do some asking about and find out who she is though.

OMG. what a nosey interferring b***t, good for you telling her to F*****F. HOW DARE SHE. Some people need a kick up the arse. cannot write anymore am fuming too
mad.gif

She sounds off her trolley to be honest.
I was talking to our local Inspector the other day and he said they get loads of crank calls and pics emailed them, apparently it makes the amount of time they have for genuine cases much less.
Shetlands are notorious for being greedy, ours is probably as wide as he is tall, but he can gallop like the wind and seems very healthy. He lives out with the small herd and tucks himself under thick holly trees if it rains, he is by far the cleverest animal here.
I would attempt to see where this madam lives if I were you, and send a snotty letter stating that you are well aware the pony is fat, and are taking steps to remedy it, and that ignorant rude people like her should check their facts before they shoot their mouth's off. Finish off by threatening legal action if she harrasses you again...

yes, i would keep an eye out for her and give her a few home truths, if she was any kind of horsewoman and she had concerns she would of politely spoken to you in a kind manner and just asked you a few questions, if your like me its nice if people show an interest in your animals

mad.gif
What a flamin cheek!! I would be freaking!! Glad you told her to efoff!! Can't have much brains to toot her horn either.....

As if anyone normal could be arsed to stop and give someone a bo**ocking for having a fat shetland while he is out on a walk!!??

Sounds like a stupid cow who has far too much time on her hands! Take no notice!
mad.gif

I got her registration number (well, part of it) and my dad knows most of the local 4x4's so he might know who she is. Then probably pass on a 'message'. I doubt she runs a livery yard, as from the direction she was coming there are no livery yards, just a couple of rented pony paddocks.

G doesnt actually eat that much, but was quite wormy (just been done for it all) so still has a 'belly' on him. And yes, he has fat pads, but bar getting him v.v fit there isnt much more I can do. (and if i get him v.fit it deems him useless as a first pony for my 2yo).
I was so mad when she grabbed his leg, I can't belive I didnt punch her!
shocked.gif
.
There are enough really abused horses and ponies about without someone moaning about our dumpy shettie.
Lol, if it rains he stands at the gate and screams and winds up the hunters down in the yard. He KNOWS i;ll go and fetch him in to save the hassle and noise. Shetties are v.clever, they think everything through.

I once had the opposite problem!

I used to ride an old schoolmaster. He wasn't the best doer in winter, and he had dropped some weight.
frown.gif
We had been working really hard to try and get him back to his usual weight, and he was looking better than he had all winter.
smile.gif

However, when I took him out for a walk to graze on the verges close to the stables, I started getting abuse from a passing teenage boy whose Mother kept two horses in the same yard.
mad.gif

He started shouting that I was starving him, and I was a horse abuser for neglecting him.
mad.gif
He did the whole thing about threatening to report me, even when I told him the horse was well into his twenties and therefore did not winter as well as many of the other horses on the yard! Stupid prat!
mad.gif

I know just how you feel! Fecking busy bodies who think they know it all. I hope karma gets her!!

precicely. If she'd stopped and spoken nicely I'd have been happy to talk to her. We meet loads of people when we're out and everyone comments on how nice and friendly he is and how 'cubby' he is, but in a nice way. And it's great because the kids love it, and if anyone's horsey I often get ideas on things I can do and a good horsey gossip lol. Everyone round here knows how much work I am putting in and how much worry.
My eldest said "we'll show her mummy, when we get our first rosette, cos he's fab isnt he?"
grin.gif
.
yeah, and I'll stick it up said woman's backside

There's 3 lovely hunters on the same yard and someone commented on how skinny one of them looks. FFS it's the end of the season and IMO they look fab considering!
If someone non horsey had said something I'd brush it off as they know no better, but a horsey person should have more sense.

I'm off to watch a dvd and calm down now, and have just remembered he's gone down two girth holes, so I must be doing something right!! *breathes a sigh of relief*
He will be a supermodel come summer!!

i know you must be feeling really angry still but try not to be, i know of a few ponies that are near to me that are thin, hidden under rugs and stood up to their knees in mud, my mate reported the man but as they have access to grass, hay and water they are not in any direct danger and hands are tied, its these kind of people that infuriate me, i wish are rspca,s and others were given more authority, the man in question has far too many horses on the land and puts himself up on a pedestal and others around think he,s some kind of a horseman, its madness

That's really sad. But this is completely different. This woman was rude, had the cheek to handle the pony, and drove by sounding her horn, which could have caused a serious accident. I think you should report her to the police, even with just part of the reg number.

I have no faith in the police, and I can't imagine they'd do anything anyway

. Luckily G is very very laid back and didnt spook at the horn, or yes it could have been nasty as he's extremely strong.

Ohhhh if iwere you i have smackered her one espec in the mood im in! corse you are doing the best you exercising him aint you? stupid woman keep her nose out hope she calls ilph and then feels so stupid when they tell her shes an idiot!

i know it wasnt really relevant to the very rude lady but it annoys me that this lady had no right to be rude to katyx at all but that there are people out there that others are frightened to speak up about because of who they are, aghhhh it is very touchy subject at moment, sorry if ranting

So true. We have horses nearish to us that are not cared for properly, too many on one field and destined for nothing. Someone actually counted them and there were 40 up there last autumn. But no-one will report them as they know that if they have grass and water the ILPH can do nothing, and the owner is quite a shrewd person. I can't really go into it, as you never know who's reading, but seeing our pampered little shetty who won't go out without a rug on and is seen to three times a day compared to some horses, that's what made me angry. the lady had no idea about him, or how we keep him.
