We have been looking for a 2nd hand trailer for a few months now and found the perfect one (well.. what we thought was perfect). We bought it for £1600 and the owners of it said they would never sell it to us in bad condition or that could be dangerous..

A few days later we took our horse out for the day in the new trailer, (not knowing the dangers) we had a great day and she loaded so well..

We decided to get the wooden floor replaced with a new metal floor (with rubber matting on top) we rang up a company and they said they would do it for us. The next day they rang us up and said that it would need a new ramp and side door very soon, so we said they might as well do it at the same time.
We then got another call this morning telling us that its worse than what they originally thought, the break cables needed to be replaced aswell, as they were useless!
Whilst on the phone to them we found out that the old owners of the trailer had gone to the company asking for £500 for the trailer, (as they knew it needed alot of work done to it and wasnt safe) the company refused it so they sent out adverts to try and sell it. Luckily the company havnt done any work to it yet so we havnt had to pay any money (they are understanding of our situation) It makes me so angry to think they were happy to sell us a trailer that wasn't safe and in such bad condition..

I'm afraid that in such a situation it is buyer beware. Thank goodness that no harm came to your horse and you are now getting it checked out.

Being first time trailer buyers it was hard for us, i'm aware it's our fault. It has just made me angry that they knew the dangers to could cause yet they lied about it.

Not really sure what you can do unless the receipt stated in good roadworthy condition or something. As you may be able to prove they knew otherwise but would need to speak to a solictor perhaps if you want your money back etc.
Other than that good job you had it checked before an accident happened :(

Thats why you check trailer before hand or get someone who knows about these things to check for you. Bit like buying a car in a way, dont think you will have much come back with the person you brought it from.

I think all you can do is sort out the problems and get wiser from the experience. People lying about what they're selling is par for the course, be it horses, cars, trailers or whatever...

Im aware now of the importance of checking the it out completely before going ahead and buying it, I know its our fault and there is probably nothing that we can do but learn from this experience. We have rang up the previous owners and they are going to ring us back asap.. would be great to get the money back but somehow I doubt that will happen!

The same thing happened to me last year.:(

I was looking for an Ifor with a "solid aluminum" floor, found one advertised on ebay, went to have a look and all seemed fine. Went back a few days later to pick it up - got it home, lifted the mats and the floor was wooden and rotten in 3 places!!

As it was advertised as having an alu floor i think i was quite within my rights to take it further but i couldn’t be bothered with the hassle in the end and just let it go and put it down to me being stupid and not checking the floor before i brought it!!

Does it say on your receipt, sold as seen? If so you are stuck unfortunately.

I personally would forget about it, put it down as a learning experience and next time take with you a professional or someone who has knowledge of trailers and their mechanics!

I feel your pain and anger. :(

We checked it over and it all seemed fine! Obviously it wasn't a detailed enough check! Im glad someone else knows how i'm feeling right now. I'm angry at myself and the previous owners, because I know theres not alot that can be done about it! It's a definate learn from experience moment!

Yup :( Definately feel your pain :(

We did something similar, though without the garage bit, but now we're refurbishing Hugh the Huge Trailer from the ground up. We'll know that it is safe and sound and able to carry three neds (at the moment, even the guy who is usually quite chilled has said we mustn't put even a shetland in it!).

A learning experience definately. At least you aren't the people who sold it to you, they have to live with being ar$e wipes.

Thats just what people are like I am afraid. They dont care at all. One tip take a screwdriver with you to test the floor for rot, dig about.

I can see why you're angry, i'm still shocked by some sellers but i think the only thing to do is learn from the experience. It's a shame because it makes you look at everyone with suspicion

If the guy doing the repairs is prepared to make a statement to the effect that. The vendors were fully aware of the true condition of the trailer you may have a case for misrepresention.
If he would be prepared to back you up fully (ie go to court) then go and see a solicitor on one of those free half an hour deals. As the vendors are so far in the wrong I suspect they'll capitulate at the first solicitors letter and it won't even get to court, but you'll need the backing of the trailer guy for sufficient leverage I think.

Despite whether you should of checked the working condition of the trailer or not, the fact remains that they sold you a dodgy over priced trailer that wasn't fit or safe for purpose (providing they knew you were buying it to use straight away) and so if this was the case, it's a nasty stunt, lets hope they don't sell cars for a living!

I'd be on blower giving them a peice of my mind, wouldn't solve anything I know but it would make me feel better.

No wonder your annoyed!

Get repair crowd to value it at what they think it is currently worth. Ask will they put their previous contact with seller in writing, Get the Ad that you bought it from and approach seller asking them to refund the difference between what you paid and what its worth. tell them they have seven days with which to respond and you will then issue instructions to solicitors to begin legal proceedings. make it sound as if you are already acting on legal advice and that this is the only option they have before courts get involved. That should produce a result

I would call the previous owners and inform them what the garage has told you and the outcome of the garages examination.

Ask for your money back or you will involve the Police.

The fact is they took the trailer to the garage and the garage informed them of the faults.

They have sold this trailer to you fraudulently knowing that it was so defective that the garage would not buy it and representitives of that said company which checked the trailer can be called as witnesses.

I feel your pain too. Slightly different, but a few years ago I bought a Land Rover. When it had to go into the garage a short time later we were told that the back axle had completely rotted through and needed replacing. It cost us a small fortune, but taught us a very valuable lesson-never take anything at face value....check, check, and then check some more-preferably with an AA man or someone else in the know!
I hope you get it sorted out soon.
