I got a very obvious horsey question wrong in a quiz at work.............. I don't think I will ever live it down!

Q: When does a filly become a mare?

So, so, so ashamed, going to burry head in BHS books and beat myself with a leadrope!

I think it's a grey area tbh - can be from 3-5. Ie, it's horses under the age of four, so you could say 4, or 3 depending on how you look at it. In racing it's 5 - so really they got it wrong, unless they specified they were talking about the racing industry

I would say you still got it right

In racing they are fillies until Jan 1st of the year they turn five in........so up to and including 4 years they're fillies.

The same applies to when a colt becomes a stallion.

I'd have said 4 (that was always what we were told as kids) but what a silly question to have in a quiz - shoot the quiz master I say! hehe
