I went showjumping today and first i did the british novice. I had 4 faults because he stopped at some scary toadstools, I still came 2nd so not too bad.

And then the Discovery

We were going fine, we had a good rhythm and were going clear until after number 6, I missed out number 7 and then realised my mistake so spun round and jumped it. He then stopped at number 8 and I was elimanated.

The worst thing was that at the same venue 3 weeks ago I forgot the course aswell. Everyone is so dissapointed and I feel like dying!

thankyou

Are you becoming anxious about forgetting the course as this will make it worse on show day. Make sure you get there very early, walk the course as many times as you can before the ring is cleared and then jump towards the end of the class so you can watch as many of the early competitors as possible.

And finally - remember it is fun!

I know what you feel, believe me; I have many “senior moments”...

What helps me is, after walking the course, do it again in my mind NOT looking at the fences (eyes closed), picturing each fence in my mind (colours etc...).
Once inside the ring and after the bell rings, I look at the course from first to last and, then I begin

i do the same as ''unclejr'' i wak the course once or twice. and then look away as i walk out of the arena and run through the course twice in my mind NOT looking at it. then watch the first two go round, and then quickyl re-warm up or whatever and then go through it again in my mind, and go in to do my round

iv only ever forgotten once, since then iv done that method ^ and never gone wrong since

Ah don't be ashamed! It happens.

Plus you came 2nd in a class - that is brilliant!

You aren't alone - I thought I was going to be sick watching them build the course for mine yesterday as I just couldn't work out where to go and was getting stressed.

Similar to unclejr - When I am in walking the course, once I have finished, I close my eyes quickly whilst in amongst the jumps and try to imagine doing them, using the colours and fillers to describle them. Seems to help me

Compared with my husband that's nothing!
Over the years he's
Gone the wrong side of the finishing tape in a BE moving him from 4th place to zilch..
Jumped the first fence backwards instead of the last when looking at the clock above, oh yes, he was last to go in the jump off and in the lead on the fastest time..
Ridden the horse too near the start and had it's tail set off the timer..
Forgotten his course more than several times..
Stared before the bell/jumped the wrong fence etc,
So are you feeling better? !!
You need to just smile as you enter the ring, it's surprising how that relaxes you and take your time.
Uncle JR's advice is the best, but don't allow your nerves to get the better of you.
(Oh and hope you end up at a show where my OH is competing, so everyone will laugh at him not you!)

the best way to remember it I find
- walk the course, get it in your head while looking at the ring.
then go away and find a quiet spot (even if your just walking round the warm up for a few minutes) and go around the course from start to finish in your head imagining each fence so you know exactly what it looks like. eg you would imagine 1, red oxer, 2, green filler, 3 water tray, 4 blue double etc.
if you can remember it without looking at the ring for help for it its easy when you've got it all in front of you!
