So come on then, if this is a buyer's market where are the buyers??

Im having the same problem, have one of ours up for sale at a very reasonable price, she is still green as only 4 and was turned away after backing.
Yet Ive only had a few people come view her, and when they have they offer silly money, which I guess why its a buyers market, but i refuse to pretty much give away my horse

i think it also comes down to how desparate people are to sell......

my friend laughs at me when im emailing ads saying "what would you take".... in other words - im not paying the asking price as its a buyers market...

i have cash waiting, they want to sell so compromise is the key imo.

Im a buyer too, ok not a horse but a horsebox. I think I have a reasonable budget and find anything I fancy is miles and miles away. I am prepared to travel but after viewing about 6 up to know, two of them 2 hrs away, I have been really dissapointed. Photos look great, get there and they are not so great. Been told its mint condition, holes in roofs, very rusty cabs, soft rotten floors or low mileage urmmm no, dont think so. Been nearly squashed by 'easy to do' ramps and gained muscles I didnt know I had just using the accelorator. It puts me off travelling anywhere as I know Im gonna be dissapointed. Then see the wagon advertised again due to timewaster???
Sorry if this is a pointless rant but there is another side to buying for us long suffering buyers too :)

We traveled from one end of the UK to the other to find out first ridden and he is worth his weight in gold, so serious purchasers do exist and are prepared to go distances for the right horse or pony.

Our Advert has been up for a week, and we've had four people arrange a day to come and see him and not turn up.......... one admittidely rang before apologising.

Numerous timewasters, one email which sounded very dodgy. Who talks about how theyre going to transfer money from offshore accounts to ours, before seeing a photo of the horse...?

Irritating...

I will be in a position to buy in September, so I only have a couple more weeks of window shopping before I'll start phoning and making viewings. I'm dreading it to be honest. I don't particuly relish the thought of greeting lots of overly emotional owners.

I have a high budget this time, and I don't want to make another mistake, but I know it is not going to be easy. There still seems to be a lot of overpriced horses and I'm going to have to make really sure I don't fall victim to buying another overpriced horse which turns out to have major issues, which were played down at the time I bought him and only became apparant after we started going out and about.

I'm only going to look at horses whose owners allow me a two week trial. I don't mind if the horse stays at their yard for the trial. I'll be upfront about that when I make first contact, so I don't waste my time if I like the look of the horse but they don't want to allow a trial.

OMG OMG OMG !
I've just found the most amazing advert and if what is said is true then it could be my perfect horse! Out of several weeks of window shopping this one has just popped up and is the only ad I've seen that's got me excited! Trouble is he's 250 miles away. It's doable, and of course I can't view for another two weeks (work commitments mean I'm not back until September). Err...and a 2 week trial at his yard wont be possible either! LOL

I really hope he's not sold by then!!!

Good luck Misinterpreted!

This may seem harsh, but to me the answer is in the question.

I know a horse is an individual and all horses have their own limitations, but I think most buyers don't understand their duty is to prepare their horse for sale so it has as few as quirks/disadvantages as possible. So your horse isn't selling, what are you doing to make it a better horse to sell???

Are you taking it to shows, loading and travelling it, walking around the field with umberellas, cycling round the field, refamilirising it to the clippers. Anything to make it a more seasoned horse. Yes it take effort, but every day it doesn't sell is an opportunity to make it into a better horse.

Just putting together some sort of an ad sticking in on a website and waiting for the world to come to you isn't enough. If an ad isn't working change it!! Are the pictures good enough, have you got it in the best spots, etc, etc.

Ok, so I will get off my soapbox now and sorry if I have offended!

I think if you read my original post you would see that I have said I am selling due to NOT HAVING TIME or the finances, so bearing this in mind I don't understand how I am supposed to do the above without hitting one of the problems which has forced the sale? You have offended as you seem to think I have just put an ad up and left it at that - some people do not have the luxury of time or money to go out to shows etc to show the world their horse. My horse does not have issues loading or travelling etc etc. As it stands at the moment, I can only get up to her once every 2 weeks due to work and study commitments - why am I even jsutifying myself to you?? I have made the best arrangements I can in my position and I am sorry if to you that equates to me being a lazy seller. I hope if you are in a position such as mine and one day you need to sell that you don't get someone saying to you what you have done to me. People's individual circumstances are different and maybe if you had taken the time to check what mine were before replying, or perhaps making your reply more general, you wouldn't have offended.

Now getting off of my soapbox - for all the people that are selling due to circumstances where they can't afford to be parading their horse around to improve it as it is definitely their own fault it hasn't sold.

I am not saying there isn't another side to it at all :) I am coming at it from the experiences I have had as a seller. I have been very honest in my adverts, I have taken the time over the phone to suss people out (as much as it is possible) and I have made it very clear that the price is definitely negotiable and yet some people still think it is ok to go on and mislead them - that goes for both buyers and sellers!

I hope you have better luck soon :)

I'm sympathising with you big time and I can identify with your reasons for selling too - perhaps we chould get together for a coffee and a moan!! I'm fed up with people who post wanted ads for exactly what you're selling and then don't bother to reply (or even acknowledge) when you respond to their ad! I have two for sale who must go before the winter; I've only advertised one so far as he's actually been backed and is going (I thought he would be the more sellable) as spending the time on him means I don't have the time to do so much with the other one (I work full-time!) . . . . . . she's a potential eventer but do people buy unbacked-but-lunged-and-long-reined 3 year olds . . . . . . if the pony would go I could get on and back her . . . . . aarrghhh!

My friend is having a nightmare selling her horse, he is a lovely lad, beautiful looking, no vices, jumps well, lovely paces etc. Absolutely no calls, we just cannot understand it

One of the reasons may be distance. For most people, Kent is a long way to travel (unless your buyer lives in Kent of course)

The other is, your friend needs some better pictures - better quality, not just a photo of a photo. Standing side on, ridden, and a better, clearer jumping one, making him look a bit more scopey.

also, the ad doesn't say his breeding - from the photo, he looks TB - if he is, that's also a reason why he hasn't sold - there's such a glut of cheap ones. If he isn't TB, then you need to say so in the advert.

Reverting to the OP - there are too many horses for sale and not enough people buying - unless you have something specific that your potential buyer is looking for, near them, then the likelihood is reduced that you'll find a buyer.

This is a bit ramdon but have you looked on project horses web site??? Some off the horses on there are silly money for some off the issues they have. Surely none off them sell.

I'm a buyer and I can symathise with your issues but it isn't much easier from where I'm sitting!

I started looking last year, and still haven't managed to actually close a sale........ we did find one we liked but the seller messed us around.

Over the last couple of months I've stopped scanning the ads and have been just relying upon "the grapevine" because I've got so disheartened with it. Scanning the adverts only seems to reveal vastly over priced horses, ones millions of miles away, TBs (I need something a bit chunkier) or ones that have "don't touch with a barge pole" written all over them.

I'll start looking properly again when I'm a little less busy and have more time to go looking but us buyers are out there!

Hi im a buyer and in Kent and i can't find what im looking for, with the hay prices going up this winter im looking for a bargain. Also not looking for anything too lively as im just coming back in the saddle after 6 years.
