Been to see huge ID chestnut today , as soon as we saw him we saw he had a huge sarcoid on sheath, so walked away.......
Other horse I loved was on first refusal to another buyer...well he had it vetted 5 stage and it showed up slight problem with noisy wind, vet may think it has too much laryngil flap..... if thats how you spell it. Seller has offerd him to me now, she says it has not impacted on his work last 5 years (he is 9) and fitter he gets less noise... any comments? I do like this horse, and he is well put together and so well mannered

um whats wrong the the huge ID having a sarcoid on it's sheath? My boy has one too in exactly the same place, no others, just the one.

You can either leave them alone or you can buy cream that burns them off - where's the problem?

Buy the huge ID chestnut.

Sarcoids may well spread. They can be treated, but can come back. It may be the only one and no more appear. It should be marked on a vetting, and if so treatment would not be covered by insurance.

Do you have a vet of your own that you could talk to about the noisy one?

The problem is - the bloody things often spread - I would never buy a horse with a sarcoid, and sweet itch is a big no no for me too.

Regarding wind problem, what is it that you will be doing with him? Unless you intend to fly around badders I wouldn't worry too much. You will also hopefully get some money off and you know he's passed a 5 stage except for the wind! Bear in mind that it will probably be excluded on your insurance for him.

Wind problems are often not a problem - although I agree I would not buy a horse with sarcoids.

Talk to your vet about the noisy one. If it doesn't present a problem for the work you want to do then go ahead and buy him. But do be aware that a) he might be harder to sell on - not a problem if you want him for life and b) he might need a rather expensive operation to tie back the flap at some point in the future and your insurance is likely to exclude that.

And the prize for the most shotgun advice ever goes to Witchy!! Lol you cant say buy a horse she hasn't told us anything about other than his size colour and health defect! lol

Yey, Thank you, thank you! :D Well it was obviously a good enough advert description and picture to lure her to going to see it.

Sorry, just me cos I want one, even with one willy sarcoid! :)

If you walked away from one because it has a Sarcoid then why contemplate one with a wind problem??

Round of applause - totally agree. I'd rather have a horse with a descreat little bump on his sheath rather than one that "Farts at Will", god the embarressment :D

Good job we are all different otherwise all the ones with willy warts and wind would be left on the shelf :D

Umm... well I would do the same! Sarcoids can (yes not always I know) be so problematic I wouldnt really want to take on the risk. If the wind problem was not really a 'problem' but is purely noise and the horse was everything else I wanted that wouldnt bother me. A bit of a large flap is unlikely to spread like sarcoids can!

OP I agree, if you are concerned then def chat to your own vet if you can and see what they think.

ETA: I'm assuming the wind problem is regarding breathing? Laryngil (no idea how to spell it either) flap would be near the larynx?

Point is - why take on something with ANY health concerns? there are plently of sound horses out there!

(mine has sarcoids that have never caused a problem - they are on his sheath - i would buy one with sarcoids tbh but thats what makes people different i suppose!)

Because they often spread. Because it will be excluded on the insurance and they are very expensive to treat. Because the OP can find a horse without any known health problems and probably save herself a lot of stress :)

Thanks everyone, seller has moved on the price of 16.2 with slight wind noise, and a weeks trial too and delivery, so this gives me the chance to get own vet to look at him, he is only going to be for general riding and hacks and flat school work, he is a super chap tho. Up to weight and ive seen so many horses past month or so that are not as ad said. Never meant to open up such a hot disscussion!!!!
This sort of horse is just what I want, and he will be my forever horse and passed on to son when his 16yr old retires and by then I will too be old and decrepid and in my rocking chair!!!!lol

defo have your own vet have a look and make sure he scopes the horse to check the wind problem. been through this myself with one of mine and despite what everyone has said only a vet can say how severe it is. mine was completely paralysed on one side (its quite common in large horses), he was hobdayed and tiebacked at the same time and was fabby until arthritis set in. problem was i never really fussed about it till i took him to a cross country training session (first time) and it was so obvious that something was wrong, vet came out and said he was being strangled and not to ride until surgery. so please please get your vet to check this first before buying - hopefull it wont need treatment but its beter to know at the start xx good luck

personally i would buy the one with the sarcoid, but then that is just because taz has had a few of them in annoying places and have been no problem to treat without getting the vet out more than once, as i found that thuja cream and tablets have worked to get rid of them and to keep them away, if your not going to be doing alot of work with the horse then you would be fine to buy the horse with a wind problem, but in my opinion a sarcoid isnt as bad as a horse collapsing as it cant breathe

Archie has a sarcoid on his sheath and it has never proved a problem in four years I have had him. I keep an eye on him.

If the horse fits the bill in all other ways then why not take a chance? I know many, many horses with sarcoids and none have proved too problematic, thankfully.
