well, thanks all so much for your recent replies to my saddle dilema. Im now on the hunt for a new saddle. Any suggestions?????

I think im gonna give SC and bates / cair a miss. quite like the look of a albion. any suggestions please.

I think we should have a review list of saddles it seems there are a lot of others struggling like me.

I would recommend and ideal over an albion. tbh. I have an ideal patriot jumping saddle. There are quite a few people on our yard with albions and the ideals seem to suit more people.

Barnsby saddles are my favourite at the moment! They are well made, fit horses well and fit me well! However, I also love Butets, Prestige, John Whitaker, Ideals, amerigo's, Jaguars

All depends what sort of jump saddle you want really

I have the Ideal Impala Pro and I know a couple of other people on here do too. I love, love, love it! It's pretty close contact but flocked so nice for their backs and adjustable (I have had a total 'mare with latex CC saddles before).

It was not that pricey comparatively and I think it looks like a much more expensive saddle. It’s single flap so you look the part for eventing too!

i'd recommend Ideal over Albion too. i think the newer Albions are better but a while back the trees really weren't great, and nor was the quality (i had 3 of mine taken apart in front of me to be smoothed over, tidied up etc inside and couldn't believe how shoddy they were, rough overlaps etc, 2 were bought new by me for a lot of money, big disappointment).
very pleased with my Ideals.

what sort of saddle do you get on with?
do you like flat seat/ deep seat? lots of padding and support? minimal knee rolls?

i can't stand albions as they have way too much padding for me- i hate big knee and thigh rolls.

i love my pessoas to jump in- they are very flat seated and have barely any knee roll so you feel extremely close to the horse and works very well with my long legs.

i also like devoucoux but am wary of the quality/fitting issues many people seem to have.

I have an Ideal Event that i used as a GP saddle, i then bought myself an Albion Kontact which is brilliant for SJ but the knee rolls are too big for really short stirrups XC, so i now have bought a Butet-Beautiful saddle!! I love all three so i think you just need to ask your saddler and see if you can have them for a week to try which is what i have done with all my saddles, apart from Butet which are made to order

Hope that helps

My favourite of all time is a King's - it must be an oldish model event saddle, with small thigh rolls and quite a deep seat. It is the cheapest saddle on our yard but my OH rides all his horses in it (including round ** and *** courses) and it had a lovely run around the J* class at Necarne last week with our groom who borrows it when he's not using it.

Our yard is sponsored by saddle companies and has loads of nearly new very expensive saddles but this seems to be everyones favourite!! By the way if anyone has one similar we would buy another one... I have been looking on ebay but most are only 16"...

well i seem to be the opposite to most of you guys. im looking for a flatish seat with big knee roles. at present i have a bates caprilli, momentum and a wintec pro jump on my other horses. i like the look of the albion and i have ideal DR saddles and love them (big knee roles again).

i have been recommended the butet but they seem alot of money, does anyone sell the second hand???????? iv never ridden in them so im only going on a recommendation but mainly as i am told they are extremly comfy for the horse and in light of recent events thats my main concern.

Saddles are so personal. All I can say is try as many as possible to see what suits you and the horse in question. I personally love Albion jump saddles and was gutted when I couldn't get one that suited my current horse, the Pessoa I have on him is good but not as nice as my last Albion! The ideals I tried weren't a patch on my Albion but at that point they hadn't released the pro so I couldn't try that.

I love my ideal springbok. I do like Butets, but megabucks and I don't think I'd want to spend long periods on a latex panelled saddle if horse comfort was my main aim (e.g. hacking etc). Ideals are good since they are wool flocked, which is great for the hrose, and they'll do serge panels too, which are even better (though i did not go for those and my ideals are both fab).

ive just got the new ideal single flap. Really like it as its not bulky, just a simple single flapped saddle. Plus you get a girth and Stirrup leather with it. Tried on loads of different makes and this is by far my favorite.

well if you like a flat seat and also big knee roles then you would love the patriot by ideal, I love mine, my horses seem to like it, and its a great saddle for jumping and especially great for galloping :-) Stirlingshire Saddlery up in Scotland sell them but I am sure they must get sold in England as I know Ideal make them! I can't comment on the butet as not seen one.
