So does anyone here hunt for reasons other than watching hounds?

Like enjoying your horse?
Hanging out with your friends?
Riding over great countryside?

Well I do.. and MrWoof seems to think this is a terrible thing. I'd like to know from him, or others, why the feck it matters??

MrWoof is a she isn't she? Or have I read that wrong.
TBH if people came out just to watch hounds I doubt many people would come out again. I number of times I have been in the field and not seen a hound for hours at a time. At the end of the day if people are willing to pay and look smart and clean etc  then what does it matter why they are there.

I totally understand that, Joe. What I don't understand is why anyone would have a problem with people who don't do it for that reason!

MrW says he welcomes newcomers - I reckon 99% of newcomers don't come because they want to see hounds work! they come because it looks like a cool thing to do with their ned and hounds are a bonus.

Hope that wasn't aimed at me. I don't need telling I work for a Master! If you see the other post I say I hunt for hounds I was just saying I don't believe everyone hunts for hounds and if they did I doubt many people would come out.

Yes, I hunt because I get to ride on countryside I wouldn’t normally be allowed too, sorry but it is very fun hack for me (yes I still do sponsored/fun rides as well)! I love the hounds but in a cute doggy way. Feel free to shoot me down, but hey!

The hounds?

Obviously the hounds are a pretty integral part of a hunt! I'm not saying that they don't do a fantastic job, I really think hounds are fab and the whole point of hunting is keeping up with hounds - but I'm not going to say that I go hunting to enjoy watching them work. I go to enjoy riding my horse following them.

So to save on the expense that everybody is saying about why don't these people just go on sponsered rides, box up with mates to different areas?? Not an argument just a valid point.

Basically if you are not bothered about hounds working and being part of the hunt and don't want to buy the gear or more to the point can't afford it, then just go out with friends to somewhere you can all meet up??

i dont see a problem with other people not interested in the hounds as such aslong as they understand to stop there horses when hounds and hunting near them and the few lil things like that. at the end of the day they pay the bills as much as anyone else and keeps me being able to do the thing i love doing watching hounds work and hunt well trail obv.

Fair comment Jobo. But can't you box up to the downs for instance. This is not supposed to be a bitch post from me just a question.

Because sponsored rides are not the same as hunting... even bloodhounding etc. is not the same as proper hunting.

I like going hunting for whatever reason (and by the way and can afford the stuff etc.), my question is, why should you be telling me I should do something else because I don't spend all day watching hounds??

I never get lost hunting as always have a good guide aka The Master, he knows where the jumps are, were we can have a good gallop etc. If I boxed to the downs I would probably end up lost as never been good at map reading, also I would probably have to go on my own. And I make new friends hunting, always see different faces.

Oh can’t wait to get out next week! :)

Just to point out Joe, it's not just newcomers.

I know my mum and dad enjoy hunting for similar reasons to myself, but have both done a couple of seasons as field master.

Just because people aren't in it just to watch hounds - does not make them clueless!

Thanks for your suggestion.. why didn't I think of that! :smirk:

Think I'll stick with my hunting.

I guess we are a hindrance. But only the same as those out in the field to watch hounds. :)

I couldn't care less about the hounds and wouldn't hunt if it wasn't for galloping and jumping.

Regarding the suggestion that I go for a hack with my friends, how unrealistic is that? There is nowhere that I know of in the whole country where you can box up and hack around galloping over open turf and jumping five foot hedges. Never mind twenty different venues within 75 minutes drive of my home. Even if there was, I don't have thirty or forty mates who will jump the hedge with me, my non-hunt friends think anything over three feet is a big fence.

but so what if cptrayes couldn't care less? They are paying the same as everyone else.

I'm thinking they mean couldn't care less, as in "I'm not interested in watching them" rather than "I don't care if my horse kicks/tramples them". :p

Starbucks of course I wouldn't harm a hair on a hounds head - no-one shouts "HOUND ON THE LEFT!!!" louder than me (unless it's on the right of course)

But I'd follow a bunch of cats if they could be kept to the scent

Simsar - but you have nothing to be defensive about!!

You just need to accept that some people like hunting for reasons other than hounds. We all think hounds are fab too! I should know - I've walked enough of the little beggers! :p
